I am looking at purchasing a Kenyan Sand Boa, what are peoples experiences .... are they good feeders, are they good for handling?
I current own 3 corn-snakes, a royal python and a brazilian rainbow boa.

I've raised one and ended-up being given it's mother years later to find a home for. I saw the little one I raised being born and took it home that very night and never had a problem with it. It was as good at being handled as you can expect a subterranean animal to be (they're not terribly comfortable being handled) and it was a terrific eater from the start.
The mother was another story. She was not a happy camper, but she was a good eater. It was a given that I was going to be bitten and chewed on anytime I had to handle her and her attitude towards people never changed in the 2 years it took to find her a more permanent home.
If you're looking for something that's comfortable around people and enjoys interaction, I wouldn't recommend any type of Sand Boa. I do like Sand Boas and had my guy for years and years, I do have to say that they don't really even make a good display snake because you never see more than a tiny dent in the sand where their nostrils are poking out (assuming you're given it the environment in which it's truly comfortable, like in several inches of sand). |
