Hey everyone. My boa pandora has taken to burying her head in the substrate and .. Erm .. Swimming? Underneath the woodchips... It looks weird but i'm wondering if it might have something to do with the RI she recently got over.
I caught it on video and will upload it when I get in from work. |

Even if it weren't gravid, it's still absolutely normal behaviour. If you put a Rainbow Boa on your lawn and it's not used to it, it'll try to dig immediately (as will a number of other snakes).
I once gave my youngest Blood Python some substrate in it's tank to play in. After 30 days of not seeing so much as a nose poking-up through the mix, I unearthed it and pointed it to it's water basin where is promptly began drinking for about 10 minutes. That confirmed my suspicion that it hadn't even surfaced to drink for 30 full days or I would have seen it's tracks in the substrate.
I knew it'd dig - this wasn't my first time around the block raising a Blood, but a full month without water? That shocked me a little and it's been back on paper ever since, lol. I don't think a Rainbow would go quite as long without surfacing, but the do certainly like their privacy.
If one prefers a more sanitary option like newspaper, you could simply put substrate in something like a rubbermaid container inside the enclosure if you want them to be able to have a choice of digging or sitting in the open. It might be your best option if she's close to popping-out little ones, and it gives them a little security which may encourage the animal to feel a bit more comfortable sitting in the open  |

I'm guessing this was to do with her being about to give birth!

My rainbow boa hides all day and comes out at night. The little BCI doesn't seem to care a whole lot about hiding, but he's like a puppy dog. My redtail also hides during the daytime but he comes out and checks things out a few times throughout the day. He's my newest and thus up front quarantined from the other two for a couple of months, so he's around the tv, noise, traffic, etc.
I have to agree with everyone else, and in my own experience, in that they do love to hide during the day. If you were to get up in the middle of the night, you'd probably see him/her exploring around.

Is normal for boas in the wild (yes I know yours isnt kelf lol) to try and hide themselves in the leaf litter and other vegetation on the ground is a way to camouflage themselves. May just be trying to do the same and hide away. |
