I have tried to find info on this but have found nothing other than a few people who say they can and others that say they don't.

Anyway Sanke as lovely natured as he is seems to every so often smell not so much foul but a bit whiffy. Can't really describe, kinda like anyone who has a dog will know this one, when my dog gets excited he will express his anal gland its not pleasant and a bit fishy, its a bit like that. Luckily he only seems to stink out his own RUB when I open it up and hasn't done anything on me or i'd be able to conclusively answer my own question.

So thats my question, is Sanke musking?

Well now, funny you should say that cos Boris isnt so wiffy any more either! Although he did just do a poo to make the dogs proud! The general aroma of his viv is much less though, so its either seasonal or he is settled now. maybe the same with sanke?

Little update, it would appear that Sanke has given up on musking when I open the RUB so thats always good news, he now smells lovely and earthy or at least his substrate does.

Oh and he has no spurs (well he has dimples where they should be but none that are visible) so I have taken the move to call Sanke a girl though I'm not a breeder or remotely bothered either way so wont be proving it by probing.

Cheers, I sort of knew that was what it was. It's not too unpleasant so will keep on as normal, he will get used to been picked up eventually.

Absolutely. Any snake can musk, but it's not as rancid in a boa or python as in some other species. I've seen the odd Boa Constrictor musk over the years, as well as some Anaconda I've dealt with.

With really gentle and proper handling (as opposed to manhandling) the snake will feel more secure and usually give that up over time. There are, of course, exceptions such as some Rat Snakes, which will retain that defensive manoeuvre regardless of how gentle you may handle them, it's just their nature to react that way to any perceived threat.

Any boid should eventually get over this with proper and constant, gentle handling.

Yeah my Royal is whiffless too, but Boa is a stinky beast, I can't work out if every so often he is musking or every so often making a smell, he was on kitchen roll and did a number 2 plus 2 urate balls and a ocean of smelly wee and its a similar smell to the wee, so its either not cleaned up properly or musking, I'd notice if he wee'd again.

Dont know the answer in truth but, Florence, my royal, has no smell, not even her poo! it seems royal poo dont smell, like the queen not farting!!! However, Boris, stinky little git! His viv has a permanent wiff! Not bad but a definite smell about it and i keep it spotless!

I reckon its a boy thing!
