Hi every one, I am new to this forum, My name is Kathleen and my rainbow is about a 2 feet long "(Raisin)" and she is not shedding her skin on her head and eye caps for the 2nd time. I know that they may come of with the next shed. I gave her a bath and some of her skin came off but not on her head. She has wet moss that she is under and that is helping with the unshed shin on her head. I have a heat mat under neath her tank and she also has a heat on top, and she gets mist twice daily. Any info would be very helpful. Thank you. Kats |

Welcome Kathleen! Shedding issues can usually be trced to a humidity issue -- not necessarily with you, but in the recent past. One bad shed (whether due to humidity or injury) can mess up the next few sheds, particularly in the area that had problems before. The best thing to do is make sure her current humidity is adequate (90%+ with a moist hide and a large water bowl for soaking), that the tank is given extra humdity when she is in shed, and then try to get off the residual shed via soaks, wet cloths (as Blackcat rightly suggested), and even filling a pillowcase with wet nespaper and letting her crawl around inside it for a few hours (inside her viv so she is warm enough). If the next shed does not fix the issue, however, take her to a vet -- multiple retained eyecaps can be dangerous!

Hello and welcome Kathleen 
When I first got my BRB he had a small amount of retained shed on his tail tip, I got a damp face cloth and made him slither through this to get the shed off.
You could try making your snake push its head in a damp cloth, it may help.
What do you use for the 'heat' on top? I only use heat mats below my RUB, I only ask as bulbs will dry the air and if you have a mat this should be sufficient.
If you supply us with a little more information on your set-up it may help with providing help for future sheds.
Things such as: Temps, substrate used and types of hide supplied.
My Rainbows all have damp hides packed with moss, this means the moss remains damp and reduces the need for constant spraying to keep humidity up.
I hope this has helped a little - I'm sure the 'real' experts will be along to give advice as I have only kept Rainbows for a few months. |
