Just wondering how often the spagnum moss in a damp hide should be changed? I'm presuming my brb isnt going pee etc where she is sleeping but maybe I'm wrong, so it would make a perfect breeding ground for bacteria etc (I'm new to rainbow boa keeping so havent used damp hides or spagnum before )

Didn't think of garden centres, thanks for that, however the day I'll be pleasantly surprised at the retail prices in this country will be a day to remember!

If you cant get moss as snakesitter has suggested, you can get small thin blocks of moss from most pet shops, it just needs hydrating. isnt too expensive either

I would not suggest trying to clean and reuse moss. However, I would also not suggest getting it at a pet store. ;-) Try your local garden supply store, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Just remember to go organic if possible.

Good luck,

Ok, thanks for that, will do. Is it possible to recycle the spagnum moss, maybe by rinsing and boiling it? The pet shops here charge a fortune for small bags of it

Rainbows will absolutely use their moss as a toilet (same as their water bowl). While you can follow a hard rule to time it, I've found the best way is to spot-clear their hide a few times a week, and smell-test it every week or so. If it starts to smell like waste (usually urine), change it all out; otherwise, you are fine removing the spoiled bits and leaving the rest. The larger the hide, obviously, the less often you will need to do a full change.

Good luck,
