Posted - 27/12/2011 : 09:43:30 hey , ive been asking round about the people i got my brb off , it seems like they have been very odd and avoiding lots of people who have brought snakes off them , ive been speaking with one person who has also brought a brb of the same person as me a couple of months back , shes told me the people i brought mine off only had one batch of brbs this year and they were cb 11's on the 20th april , she also said that one of her friends also brought one which is half the size of hers and are from the same batch and think they have been under feeding them to keep them small , mine is currently weighing 41 grams , if mine is an april 2011 brb , could the weight suggest its under weight and explain why its not eating , any help and advise is very welcome :) |

Posted - 04/01/2012 : 05:27:19 A snake coughing up *anything* is never a good sign. Keep a close on him, keep the temps on the high side of normal, and keep your vet informed as to what happened. Fingers crossed for him and you!!! |

Posted - 29/12/2011 : 20:39:01 thankyou for your advise and help im aware that mouse pinks are not enough and have been offering him fluffs , i was told by a friend that also brought a brb off the same people that they had been feeding the brbs on mouse pinks , id rather get mine on rat pinks then rat pups once he starts feeding , ive only ever read that quarantineing snakes needs to be for 2 months , i will change mine to atleast 6 months now , and ill switch to a alcohol-based sanitiser , i appriciate all your advise :) |

Posted - 28/12/2011 : 21:23:37 Mouse pinks? That's *not* enough to sustain a baby Brazilian, unless you feed three or four at each sitting!
I would respectfully urge you to increase your quarantine length, and drastically. Three to six months is the standard recommendation, and the more animals you have, the longer of a period makes sense. I have used six months for years.
Good call on the sanitiser, but I would switch to an alcohol-based one instead of an anti-bacterial one. The anti-bacterial may eventually lead to a resistant strain, which will be a huge pain for keepers everywhere. The alcohol option has no such drawback. I've eliminated anti-bacterial products from my practice for thet very reason.
Good luck! |

Posted - 27/12/2011 : 20:15:47 yeah i always quarantine my new arrivals for 2 months before i add them into the same room as my collection and have anti bacterial sanitiser in each room to use befor and after handling/feeding etc , from what ive been told it seems like they may of brought a couple of batches to sell on to try and make a profit , and they was feeding them only mice pinkys so they would stay small and be worth more , these people have been reported to the local rspca now to make sure the rest of there snakes are healthy and looked after |

Posted - 27/12/2011 : 19:32:07 A current weight of 41 grams would be very small indeed for an April baby. My 2011 litter, born in mid-September, averaged almost 50 grams within ten weeks. If your snake was born very small, and then fed only sporadic and small meals, that could explain its weight...but 41 still surprises me. And it would not explain a current lack of appetite.
A vendor that avoids customers is *never* a good sign. Not to alarm you, but if you are not quarantining your new arrivals from your current collection, I'd start doing so immediately, if only to be "better safe than sorry."
Anyone else have anything to add? |
