Posted - 06/07/2012 : 06:04:54 Hi there. I am new at this, but I purchased my baby rainbow boa about a month now. He is not eating and I was told to force feed him but he still will not eat. I was giving him both a thawed out pinky and a live pinky and still nothing. He just had his first shed about 2-3 days ago now. I am getting worried cause he is not eating. Yet he is still active, and he only snipped at me once and never again. The temp for his home is between 40-50% Humidity. If I have the temp wrong please tell me what to do to treat him with care!
So again I ask..should I be worried? And when I handle him, it does not seem that he lost any weight. I have read posts here but I still would like peoples help on this. So please any help and advice is really appreciated!!! |

Posted - 13/09/2012 : 04:24:41 Thanl you Cliff for your help and understanding. But I do have a question about correct substrate for my vivarium. I asked it in the proper forum topic thou so it is easier for the rest to read. |

Posted - 12/09/2012 : 20:36:26 I understand your feelings, and respect your desire to wait. Hopefully I'll have a few litters on the ground by the time you are ready. Forum rules generally prohibit vendors discussing their own prices; however, if you drop me a line through Facebook or by e-mail, I'd be happy to answer in detail. :-) (Links are in my sig.) |

Posted - 11/09/2012 : 08:02:00 Thank you Cliff. And yes I am interested in buying one from you but not for awhile cause I am still saddened that Niijis death could of been prevented and I felt as if I couldn't give her the proper treatment no matter how hard I tried...but yes I would be on the waiting list cause I understand its first come first serve and I respect that. But gor future reference, how much are your BrBs going for? I would like to save a little bit when I can and when I am ready, I would have the money ready.
Again, thank you... |

Posted - 10/09/2012 : 21:06:48 Thank you for the sales plug, Jeff and Jenn! Hidenshi, I have three female rainbows that were paired up this year. Two of them were with proven males. However, due to a late start breeding, I'm looking at late-year litters for any who take -- in two cases maybe as late as December. (But who knows, maybe I'll have an "October surprise"?) I assume you'll want some time to recover after this last incident, so that timing may work out well for you. My Facebook page has a no-hard-commitment wait list, which is the first stop I would recommend you make, as the folks on that list will be the first to learn about new babies.
Again, most sorry for your loss. RIP little one. |

Posted - 10/09/2012 : 07:19:58 Oh ok so he actually sells BrBs? I hope he doesn't mind me buying one from him. Thank you both for your suggestions. I really appreciate it. |

Posted - 10/09/2012 : 01:09:11 I agree. If you're in the US, Snakesitter (Living Gems) would be my first choice. If he doesn't have any babies left available, you could also try Rainbows-R-Us, they have top quality Rainbows too. |

Posted - 08/09/2012 : 16:17:14 Dont give up. I lost Baby, my first BRB. She was bought from a chain pet store. She wouldnt eat, had a bad shed and eventually passed. Like you, I tried everything I could to help her. Got lots of great advice from Cliff, Incurable, Todd and many others on this forum. Unfortunately nothing worked. I found out a month later that the pet store had lost every one of there BRB's. As fate would have it, I got the addiction, found a great honest breeder and got another beautiful baby who is doing wonderful. Thanks Cliff . So dont give up. Jeff&Sue |

Posted - 07/09/2012 : 21:52:18 I'm so sorry for your loss, Hidenshi! It was almost certainly due to a bad sale -- no one should ever sell an animal with mouth rot (or any other disease/deformity) unless fully disclosed and agreed to beforehand (eand this only in rare and special situations).
I'd urge you not to abandon internet sales. It was not the method of purchase that was the issue, it was the seller. There are excellent breeders out there who sell over the net, just as there are bad stores who sell face-to-face. More important than the method is the reputation and support of the seller. Looks for good reviews on-line and even request a reference if you like. But breeders often have more baby options, less disease risk (this is often huge with stores), and better species knowledge for after-sale support than stores do.
Again, sorry for your loss. |

Posted - 07/09/2012 : 01:32:21 You most certainly are not! I know it is hard not to think you are, but you did everything you could to save Niiji. It just wasn't mean to be and she just couldn't fight it off in time to be saved. :( I do agree that you need to be very careful of who you get your next one from, though. Find a good, reputable breeder if at all possible (I dunno of any breeders in the UK, myself, but maybe someone else does and can suggest one) and then go from there. Even store bought snakes can have a multitude of health issues, so be really selective and careful. I really am so very sorry for your loss, though. I know you really loved your little girl. |

Posted - 07/09/2012 : 01:03:43 Thanks for your kind words....I do still want another BRB..but I should be careful next time and always be aware of the mouth area...and instead of ordering it online, I should just buy one at the store here. I still feel as if I am a bad snake owner. |

Posted - 07/09/2012 : 00:09:36 Awww, Hidenshi, I am SO very sorry for Niiji's passing. Don't beat yourself up over it, you did the best you could with everything you had. It is likely that she was given to you with the mouth rot and it was only a matter of time. Some can fight it off, but many do not make it...especially if they can't eat. Your poor lady will stay in my thoughts and you too. *HUGS* |
