Posted - 24/09/2012 : 22:34:00 Congrats on the second feeding! Now she has some calories in her. :-) What Sue said about temps is very true -- I always get a much better feeding response whn the meal is *piping* hot. I would offer another mouse, BTW, just to keep her food choice consistent. You do need to move her up in mouse size though once she gets feeding, mouse pinks are just too small...
Good luck, you're on the way!!!! |

Posted - 23/09/2012 : 16:03:17 Great news regards the second feed Hope all goes well with the defrost next feed - I have to make sure mine are really hot for Orinoco, if they cool down before she decides to be interested I have to re-warm or she just ignores them. I agree far too easy to buy new snakes, but like you I have a maximum of 6 (which I already have) due to limits on space for their adult homes. Hope the change around went ok |

Posted - 22/09/2012 : 13:49:18 Got another pink for her yesterday and she ate again - not at first though, when I first put it in she ignored it clambering all over her face!!! Left her alone for an hour and she was sitting there with a little bump lol. Shop said the guy that dropped it off said that was his last currently, and could not say for certain when he would have any more, so will have to try with a defrost next week and keep fingers crossed! Don't worry, we are not going to take on more snakes than we can handle ;) We have already decided that if we were to get any more the absolute maximum would be 2 2ft vivs on top of Corno's brand new 4ft one (for maybe a hoggie and a housie), and like I say, I'm sure hubby will want to get a BRB in future but that will definitely be our limit. I know from people's sigs on the corn snake forum how easy it is to get a houseful! But I wouldn't want to end up neglecting them all and not having time to spend with each of them regularly :) (and we have promised that when we do get our 4th snake it would be daughter's choice - then we have 1 each - plus the inevitable BRB and the spare space for 2ft viv ;) ) So - absolute maximum of 6 snakes... I promise :p
(unless I give in to the breeding urge, seeing all those cute little hatchies on the CSF... rofl)
Speaking of not neglecting them, I need to get on - having a big changearound today, Corno's (anery corn) just moved up to a 4ft viv as Ember (amel cube corn) was desparately in need of moving out of her faun into a bigger viv, just got to clean out Corno's old one and get Ember settled into it now :) |

Posted - 21/09/2012 : 21:02:11 I've never understood the sanity of that law. :-( Do you have any local herp societies in your area? I betcha they know a source.
That they are! Just (and you seem very aware of this) know your limits -- many keepers end up adopting so many snakes they no longer can give full attention to the ones they first fell in love with.
Good luck!!! |

Posted - 20/09/2012 : 12:16:14 Not something I can do lol - don't forget, selling live pinks over here is illegal, so the shop owner has to get someone to 'give' him one then he has to give me one, his main contact mainly breeds rats which is why he took a while to get one in the first place. He didn't charge me for it, but obviously I can't expect him to provide me with free food forever ;)
I did make sure I bought something else from his shop as a thank you though, I'm not that cheeky lol. Plus young daughter saw a little hognose in there and she is obsessed with them. Hubby has always said not until she is older due to the venemous aspect but yesterday he shocked me by saying maybe we should get one, so we may be doing further business with the pet shop anyway :O Plus I know he is probably going to want to get a Brazilian at some point in the future lol - but not until long after we've got Prism eating properly! Snakes are too addictive! |

Posted - 19/09/2012 : 23:45:34 I'd place a weekly standing order for live right now, just so they know you need them. You can try thawed, but do not be surprised if she refuses it. |

Posted - 17/09/2012 : 22:45:46 OK will do, thanks Cliff :) If the shop has trouble getting a live pink again do you think I should try a thawed, or wait the extra time until they can get one in? (Covering all the pessimistic angles here after it took them so long last time lol)
*still on a high lol* |

Posted - 17/09/2012 : 22:23:08 Bunny, I would get at least three meals in her using the food she just told you she likes -- live mice. Feed once per week. Do not handle her the evening before a feed, the day of, or for three days after, just to be sure. That does limit handling time, but those calories are important right now! Once she has three meals in her, try getting a live mouse and fresh-killing it and see if she will take it. (I'd get two and only kill one: in case she refuses, you still have alive one to fall back on.) Good luck!

Posted - 17/09/2012 : 21:00:46 Right OK so, now I have clamed down a bit... what do I do next?!
Obviously we are desparate to get her out for a bit of a hold (jeez, I found the 1 week wait with the corns agonising!), but realistically I know she needs to get a few more feeds in her 1st. SO, 1st feed in over 2 months - how long should we wait before the next feed attempt, and should I try thawed or just attempt to source another live for the next few feeds? |

Posted - 16/09/2012 : 18:54:38 Tell me about it - talk about stressful lol. The pet shop phoned me at 5.15pm on Friday to tell me they'd got one and I needed to collect it that night... by 5.30... and I live 30mins away if NOT in rush hour lol! So I had to go for when they opened on the Saturday, then I had to get back, pop pinky in with Prism (who showed interest but flinched back each time it rolled over and bopped her nose) and just leave her to it and keep fingers crossed... while I then dashed off on a journey to meet my new baby neice!
I got back last night and hubby had been too nervous to check, and I decided to leave her as well - just in case she had eaten I didn't want to cause a regurge! Checked this morning and was so relieved! Just got to hope she keeps it down now...
