So I attended Repticon here in Tampa Florida this last weekend in search of some info and, if the conditions were right, maybe a snake. Sadly I still find myself snakeless  . My original intent was to find a reputable breeder who was local and I felt I could trust. Out of the dozen vendors I spoke with only two had rainbows and only one of them actually bred them. So I asked a few questions and was quickly left with one of the vendor's sons to talk with. I guess he realized I wasn't ready to buy from him and moved on, can't blame him for that. But before he left he mentioned that its better to get a BRB after its grown a bit, 8-12 months was the range he suggested, to prove it's healthy and eating well.
Now, I think this may be a suggestion to basically get passed the "nippy" age that so many seem to be afraid of. I'm not worried about a few bites and I'm sure I've hurt myself much worse than a small snake can and I had planned to get a snake as young as safely possible (1) so it knows me from an early age and hopefully tolerates me better, (2) because I'm amazed at how fast these animals grow and want to watch it happen myself, and (3) they're just so darned cute when they're tiny.
So what is the normal suggestion for age when buying? I've seen a wide range and I remember reading somewhere on here to allow the babies a shed and a feed or two before selling/buying, so any suggestions for or against picking one up as young as I can get one?

Ask for pictures of the parents and care records. If the seller cannot provide both, look elsewhere. |

Thanks for the info guys; looks like I need to ask if its shed, fed, and pooped! Anything else to keep in mind when buying? Keep the knowledge coming! |

I got my BRB at 2 months... Not Nippy unless you stress it out or corner it...They do grow fast!! I love little Romo, he's the best! |

I typically start listing babies for sale only when they have shed once (requires two weeks), eaten three times (which I start after shedding, and only offer once per week), and pooped once -- which puts the count at around six weeks at a minimum. I'm considering increaeing that to two sheds and six meals. I will also hold babies until they get past the nip-every-time stage if the proves to take longer than the six weeks. Some people sell theirs sooner, but that always makes me nervous. |
