Posted - 10/02/2013 : 08:10:54 Okay, so these may sound like silly questions and may have been answered elsewhere. I apologise if that's the case.
I'm hoping to get a baby BRB this year (I've been researching like mad for ages because I like to know exactly what I'm getting myself in for).
I've seen BRBs for sale in several places, one of which was the Doncaster breeders meet last year. I had to resist them at the time because I got 4 hatchling corn snakes within a few months of each other and that was enough to be going on with.
Anyway, enough waffling, onto the questions...
1. What is the time of year that BRBs are normally available? I'm kind of assuming that because they have a sort of breeding season (according to my research?) that there would be a sort of cycle and therefore a time of year where most of the babies are sold.
2. Do BRBs prefer mice or rats? I just mean if I were to start by feeding a BRB on mice (because I have 6 corn snakes so I have lots of frozen mice of all sizes) then would it be difficult to persuade it to eat rats when it was bigger? I'm assuming a baby would start on fuzzies or hoppers or something similar, one times the width, right, so pinkies would be tiny for them? Feeding four jumbo mice in one sitting doesn't seem ideal, but if I had no other option then I could cope with that. Would it be bad for the snakes' health to do that? I suppose I could order some young rats from the same place as my mice when I next do an order but I've got hundreds of mice in my freezer because I buy 6months to 1yr supply and vacuum pack them to keep them fresh.
3. How do you heat your BRBs? I've read about thermal blocking issues with heat mats and large snakes but BRBs don't seem so thick bodied to me and ceramic bulbs don't seem so logical with the very high humidity that is so important for this species...very confusing.
Thanks in advance for your help |

Posted - 11/02/2013 : 21:04:51 Hi Moppet!
Most Brazilians have litters in the August to October timeframe. However, it is not an absolute rule, and I know one breeder who has had litters in every month of the year.
Most Brazilians are partial to mice, but it's better to get them on rats. Once they grow up, it will take four feedings to give them enough using mice, whereas one medium rat will do the trick. A baby Brazilian can take a rat pink or a hopper mouse from birth. If yuo have mice right now, feel free to start the little on on those, but switch when you next order food.
Bulbs are troublesome for Brazilians, as (as you note) they can cause issues with humidity. I generally recommend undercage heating or a radiant heat panel.
I hope this helps, and good luck! |
