Posted - 19/08/2010 : 22:27:40 By way of introduction to the forum, following are profiles of my Brazilian Rainbow collection. This is an adaptation of a quarterly post I usually place on another forum, and has been slightly rewritten for this audience -- but should serve as a good introduction.
I currently host 21 animals. The roster consists of:
The Boys --Drake --Galahad --Ghandi --Lancelot --Prometheus --Scarface --Unnamed #1 --Unnamed #2
The Girls --Agate --Alexandrite --Almandine --Bixbite --Carnelian --Citrine --Jasper --Malachite --Onyx --Pyrope --Spessartine --Tigers Eye --Topaz
Below, each snake is given its own post, featuring name, background, weight, and six to eight photos.
For names, I use gemstones for the girls (“Living Gems Reptiles”) and famous historical figures for the boys.
For background, I include age and a sentence or two on any quirks the animal has demonstrated.
For weight, I previously used a Sunbeam food portion scale, which gave a weight based on a spinning dial marked with small measurement lines. In June 2010, I switched to a much more accurate digital model, the 7001 DX Digital Compact Scale. In either case, however, my methodology is the same: I take two measurements, then use their average (rounding down) as the final weight.
For photos, I take a series of shots indoors using a light tent, which is promising for color, but almost eliminates iridescence; and then a second series of shots outdoors, which captures the natural glow and iridescence so important to a Brazilian’s looks. In each location, I take several photos of each snake from each of three different angles: the right side, the left side, and overhead (note these directions are from my perspective, so a “left side” shot may capture the front of the snake if that is how he/she chooses to coil). I then whittle this raw footage down to a “keeper” from each angle that best captures the subject’s looks. It’s a decent methodology, but please note it’s still not perfect. As you will see, I still suffer from a few “off” shots due to the camera over-adjusting for the vivid blue of my backdrop (white balance issues, I need to learn that). I also have a tendency to take most of my photos late in the evening, so many animals show whitewalling and slightly lighter colors than they do during the day.
All that said, here we go! (I’ll put a up a few animals each day, so as not to overwhelm everyone.)
All the best, |

Oh How Original |

Posted - 29/11/2010 : 19:19:07 Yes, I have pictures and info. But I've been putting the effort that went into these posts into crafting a new website. It's just a slow process. I will try and throw some individual snakes up though as I get time, maybe even some of the new arrivals! |

Thank you! She’s a good-looking animal for sure, the best bullseye specimen I’ve seen. (I looked at the two bullseye-heavy babies her parents produced for 2010, and think she is a stronger pick than both.) I just need to work some color into her line and great things will result. By the way, she’s growing by leaps and bounds, and has gotten a bit darker to boot. Those silver eyes contrast beautifully with the dark mask of her face.

LOL thanks. I’m a Brazilian specialist, and moreover one focused on breeding top-tier (and only top tier!) normals. No current plans to offer boring brown babies, or to expand beyond rainbows....though one morph, hypos, are in the plans.

Thank you! I’m coming up on quarterly photos for all of them, so we’ll see if anything good crops up, for Jasper as well as a few others.
quote: Originally posted by sullysteveI find it mad that diffrent pics of the same snake, make the snake look like a diffrent color shade. This surely makes a diffrence when trying to establish a BRB's exact morph when taking pics.
Brazilians are one of the toughest snakes out there to photograph. They change looks depending on camera angle, degree of lighting, angle of lighting, time of day (e.g., whitewalling), and more. I don’t white balance my camera, which is part of the problem, so my outside shots and inside flash shots are always much more color-consistent than my inside no-flash ones.

Yes, it does -- but even then the above factors will drive your perception. For example, Brazilians always look more red in outside light, so what looks like a dull brown snake inside might seem much more colorful outside in strong sunlight. If you catch the right time of day, when the angle of the light catches and refracts in the snake’s scales, you will also notice the iridescence much more, which can further bias your judgment. That’s why it’s so hard to judge even in- person visits across different vendors and times. A challenge, but worth it! |
