Well I am going to view a baby Argentine Rainbow Boa tomorrow, but I don't have a hygrometer to measure the humidity...
If I buy it, will the snake be OK without any humidity for a couple of days until my hygrometer comes off eBay?

There you go! And, hey, there's a Royal for every budget (no pun intended for you UK folks) :)

Graeme, thank for the pricing insight. Joe, great advice as always. OHO, good luck in your search!

Yeah we call them Balls over here too.
I've decided against buying either of them.
The male is a bit too small really, he looked a lot bigger on the pictures to be fair.
And after thinking about it, I don't want a gravid female, although I do have the space now, and polyboxes and all that kind of stuff, I didn't realise they would be hybrids.
Although I could cope with the babies for a while, if they became hard to sell, I wouldn't have the room for them if they needed RUBs or something.
So decided to just continue in my royal hunt and see what I can get with my budget.
Thanks a lot for all the advice guys, really appreciated!

Well you gotta love the royals, we call them ball's here. I can remember days where I literally picked up over 500 and never a strike or attempt. They never would confuse you for a rat, lol.

I'd consider whether or not I wanted to end up with 20+ babies, that is if you bought the gravid female and she is in fact gravid. You'll also have to keep her quite warm or she'll slug. She'll ned to be kept by herself, and pretty much left alone, so she won't be much of a pet for you for a while, until she has her litter. Lots of mouths to feed can become costly for someone who is looking for a pet only.

Sounds like you'll let your heart tell you which way to go.

Good luck on whichever choice you make!

Well his Boa (common) just gave birth to 28 babies.
Also he has a load of corns that have just hatched, and leopard geckos, so he's in need of a bit of a cash injection.
And I hadn't thought about the whole hybrid ARB X BRB thing either, so thanks for pointing that out G.
If I was to go for one, I think it would probably be the male.
But I'm unsure about him to be honest, because originally I wanted a royal, but just happened to stumble upon this, so I may continue in my royal search.
And also, I'm pretty sure the female was a pure ARB...
Thanks for all the help guys :)

I can think of a few reasons, these are only opinions and not meant to offend anyone.

the cynical one, being he is wanting a quick sale as if she is gravid with a cross litter, it wont be easy to sell as most prefer either one or the other not a cross of both as breeding prospects with crosses isnt the best idea, therefore wanting this lady out of his way to save having to deal with that litter.

probably more realistic, if its not gravid, it is a fair price over here at the moment Snakesitter, there are not many snakes changing hands so people will be taking what they can get.
Snakesitter Posted - 28/06/2011 : 01:14:34
Agreed, I missed that detail. Still wondering why she's so cheap, though -- especially if gravid, why sell her for only $40 more than a single baby would fetch?
ptmbradley Posted - 28/06/2011 : 00:11:43
£80 is a fair price from a breeder. Mine was £140 from my local reptile shop. Can't help with the gravid female but what Gmac said about the crosses would make me wary personally. But that's just me.
gmac Posted - 27/06/2011 : 23:46:56
The prices seems reasonable for both snakes, however by taking on the female, should she be gravid, you are likely to have problems selling the babies as they will be ARB x BRB crosses and hybrids are not everyones cup of tea.

Now this also makes me wonder if you viewed an ARB or an ARB x BRB cross.

dont know if this helped sorry.
Snakesitter Posted - 27/06/2011 : 23:23:32
Why is the breeder selling the mother? That seems low for a proven female if she's attractive and in good shape.

I'll leave price commentary up to UK folks, as I know the values are different over there than in the US.

Well I'm back from the viewing, and what a stunning little snake!!
Reeeally nice browny caramel colour, excellent temperament.
But the guy also has the babies mother for sale, and he said that he thinks a male BRB has locked with her, so she could be gravid.
Need a bit of help with the pricing though as I've never bought one before, he wants £80 for the CB11 male, or £120 for the proven breeder female, which he thinks is about an 2007.

If the vendor is worth their salt, they should have no issue with your approach. Let us know how the viewing goes!
Oh How Original Posted - 27/06/2011 : 15:38:17
OK thanks guys, I'll still go view it today, and if I do want it, I'll leave a deposit, and explain to the people that I need to get the setup ready and things.
I'm pretty sure they would be OK with waiting a little while.
Snakesitter Posted - 27/06/2011 : 00:49:18
I agree with Graeme, better to wait. That said, if you can't delay, go humid. Too long without humidity can be lethal to these snakes, especially babies!
gmac Posted - 27/06/2011 : 00:15:35
you are best setting it so it is humid, just means you cant measure it. Personally I would hold off on collecting the ARB until your setup is ready.
