Hi all! Just when I thought things were getting busy again, no-one posts for about 3 days straight! lol Sad times.

Anyways, I mentioned on my introduction that I'm a Product Design and Technology Student at Loughborough University (in the UK), and my final year project is very much in line with reptile and amphibian keeping. If anyone is from the midlands/London area, it'd be great if when I get some more ideas down on paper, if I could run them past you and get some input!

In return, you get the priveledge of having your name listed in a dissertation paper, have a title of "Herpatologist" or "Snake expert" (or anything you like, so long as it's not rude!). And possibly a chocolate bar :)

A hygrostat?
Also look at piezo humidifiers

I really like the look!

For materials, remember that glass is both a poor insulator (and this species needs good temp control) and extremely heavy in larger sizes, and that any internal wood will have to be caefully treated to resist moisture.

For size, 90cm x 60cm is almost perfect for a single adult (it translates to just under 36in x 24in). You can go larger if you want to give them more room or allow for a breeding pair.

Duly noted, I'll put that into the equation. Only problem, the larger the tank, the more space for me to have to regulate.. But I suppose if I can get the technology to work in the largest size necessary, then it should only be easier to let it manage a smaller environment!! It's probably also going to be a hybrid between wood and glass, or at least with as much viewing sapace as possible. I figure that the market will only increase if the aesthetics of the animals and their surroundings are shown off as much as possible when people see RB's in peoples living rooms! :P

Hey Oscar , sorry can't write my full thoughts as I'm using my phone but when I get home I will reply properly , I think for glass a 90x60x60 is better and for a wooden viv I'd go for 4x2x2.

I'm a student in Loughborough - MORE than happy to have a beer with you guys! (and pay for first round!) And possibly an English breakfast Ash, why not! Know anywhere good around Leicester??

I'm just working on the technical side of things at the moment - mainly humidity. I'm looking at various ways to generate humidity in a Viv using an automated "thermostat" like system. Ultrasonic foggers? Steam? I'd prefer to go with ultrasonics as I dont think any of our snakes would appreciate a blast of hot steam to the face if they happened to be sitting next to the outlet..

Visual-wise, keeping it fairly simple, initial design looks something like:

But this is only concepts I CAD'd up this morning, so don't judge! Only difference I suppose is a curved front face, possibly convex to allow a bit of magnification. Also going for a 3.2" touch screen AMOLED display to set temps, humidities and light cycles (Yes, i'm very much a bloke who loves gadgets). Going to go for the full size Viv too - at L90xD45xH60. This ok for a full size adult?

I'll try and get in touch with some of you in person to prevent clogging up a new topic thread each week :) But will keep people updated on progress and let people put in suggestions!

Cheers,

Oscar

If it was cake, then I'd be interested as well.

Did someone say "chocolate"? ;-) Feel free to fire away!
