I've been keeping records of everything LoL Probably just due to my being anal retentive, but got me thinking:

Who here keeps records and of what?

I am currently keeping track of size/weight, feed (what fed, how many feed items, dates), defecation, and blue/shed. I know some people might say I'm being too thorough, but that way if something ever comes up and I have to make a vet trip or something, I'll be able to accurately have all the correct info.

Cliff: I know you keep track of some info as well. I saw you posted on a thread in regards to approximate weight at different ages. Is there anyway you'd be able to post a thread with your average weights at different age intervals?? I think it'd be a pretty good piece of info to have. Obviously there will be differences from each individual snake, but just an average would be cool. There isn't hardly enough reliable info readily available. As you seem to have the largest collection here I'm hoping you'll be able to have the most widely diverse info to pull from.

Go for it, I'd love to see!

They kept both of my corns for breeding, one was a reverse okeetee and the other was a huge 6 foot okeetee male, the biggest they have ever seen they said. Part of the reason for this was because they knew they were good specimins that had been properly looked after, my records proved this.

Got some old photos somewhere, i may stick em on the other snakes bit of the forum, i i can find them!!!

Shops always seem shocked by records, lol. I hope they did something useful with the data and passed it on to the new owners!

I keep a bit of data too and like some of you i stick to the trusty old excel spreadsheet.

I just use a few columns and mainly track feeding.

I record date, food items e.g. 3 mouse fuzzies and i have a remarks colunm. I this i record food refusals, usually coz she is going blue, wich is also recorded. I record when she sheds and length after shed.

I dont bother with bowel movements.

I did this with my corn snakes and i had charts that covered about 4 years, when i sold them back to the shop i bought them from (due to the arrival of children) they were shocked and impressed with the amount of data i had.

They are a good tool and i would reccomend anyone to do it.

LOL, too true! (Though I use Excel too.)

I use an excel spreadsheet, but I did like the vyper lite. A little too much for me personally though. But hey, if it'w worth doing it's worth doing to excess right! lol :)

Perhaps I'd be better off with just sticking to the good old excel spreadsheet I had going prior to my discovery of the program LoL.

On records, I tend to be paranoid. It would be the highest of irony to spend years gathering data for safety...then lose it all due to a bankruptcy.

Think there was another called 'degu' or something similar to that.
Can't remember exactly what it was called, shall have a hunt.

For those who do want a program, however -- Jonathan got me thinking about it :D -- here are two other well-regarded commercial products: Iherp & Metzcal.

Good find, Jonathan! I've considered software...but then I also like to hedge my bets. If any one of these (very specialized) firms ever goes out of business, all that hard-entered data could well be gone, too....

I've just recently ran across some software that tracks/records as much, or as little, information as you care to document. Didn't know if anyone else was familiar with it so I thought I'd share the link here:

This is the free "lite" version of the program that allows you to record data on as many as 6 snakes. It seems to be pretty user friendly and self-explanatory.

Thanks for the info...did not know that, but makes perfect sense. Guess it comes from it stretching while being shed.

Maybe not the most accurate way, but I have been measuring the shed so long as it's a good shed(one piece).

Sheds will always be longer, and by quite a bit, so remember to adjust for that. Good luck!
