Posted - 12/05/2012 : 04:20:02 So we have had our rescued BRB for two weeks now. Very eventfully this past week. With my face getting a nice strike, and the girlfriend receiving two bites on the hand. (she was a trooper and went right back in, and he ended up calming down).
For about 8 days now, he has been in his cold hide, without coming out for as much as a drink. I took a peek about 6 days ago and it appeared as though he was going into shed, although its hard to tell with his eyes being all buggered up. (another reason for the bites i believe) Today I cleaned out his moss hide and replaced it.
Warm temp: 80-82.5 cold: 66-72 Humidty- 82% moss hide: 91%
Right now he doesn't spend much time soaking, so i give his eyes a very light mist every 3 days, hoping it helps.
It appears as though his skin is starting to get lighter. It almost looks like his scales have "risen" over the past 2 days, and previously damaged scales have become more visible. Is this a sign he is going to shed soon?
What do you guys think of his eyes? His eye caps have been retained for the last year, over and over again. He was also subjected to bright light 8 hours a day for a year and a half. What are the chances all his previous eye caps will come off in one shed? I refuse to remove eye caps myself.

Posted - 21/05/2012 : 21:50:29 Hmm, it should come off all in one piece. Your humidity sounds right though, so maybe it was just a "residual" bad shed and next time will be fine. Good job checking to make sure it all came off. As for his striking...hard to say. Just keep on working with him and hopefully it will go away. Fingers crossed for you, it sounds like you are on the right track! |

Posted - 20/05/2012 : 20:06:07 His body came off in about 3 pieces, while his head came off in too many to count. I did make sure every last peice came off. At the time his humity wa at 82, but since his shed I upped it to 86, and the moss hide is sitting at 95-97%. I am confident his next shed will be healthy.
Since his shed, we have handled him twice. Both times we had issues getting him back into his viv. He strikes at everything that moves. We found this weird because every time we held him in the past we had no problems. I believe this is because his caps came off, and isn't used to seeing giant hands coming towards him. This is very new, unexpected behaviour. We are going to handle again today. |

Posted - 18/05/2012 : 21:08:57 He *looks* much better, but if you can't find his eye caps I would not assume anything. How did the rest of his (non-face) shed come off -- one piece or tatters? |

Posted - 14/05/2012 : 20:37:46 Wow. I'm not surprised he's defensive with his eyes like that. Check his belly: if it is pink, it's a good sign he is in shed. Your climate stats look solid, except that the cold end should stay in the low 70s. Try spraying him daily until he sheds. Once he does, if the eye caps are still retained and you'd still prefer not to treat yourself, take him to an herp vet or an experienced herp friend at least...those need to come off. Good luck! |
