I have noticed a few little creatures crawling on my baby brb today when i was holding her I am going to treat her with frontline tomorrow just in case but Im not sure if they are actually mites they are not around the eyes mouth or ventral scale and she isn't showing any signs of mites. She hasn't shown any signs in the month I have had her and I havent seen any before either. I gave her her weekly clean out last night and was wondering if they could be from the substrate I use orchid bark there definetly not from the moss because I pour boiling water on it before using it. How could she catchites if she didn't have them when I got her? any info would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Good news, Sandi!
sandi Posted - 15/03/2011 : 08:47:39
Will do!

I'm starting to think that the hypoapids have been better than i first thought as Boris spent most of yesterday in his water bowl and when he came out there wasnt a single mite to be seen in the water and the kitchen towel has been spottless for days now.

Will still use the spray when it arrives.

Good luck, hope you get rid of the little blighters!

Thanks sandi I have read a lot of good reviews about that keep me posted :)

From what i can make out, provent-a-mite is only available in the USA. Although we can get it on ebay through international sellers, it makes it very expensive due to postage.

The only other mite treatment, apart from frontline, is callingtons mite spray. This is the product i am about to use as a precautionary spray in the viv.

I will let you know results.

Thanks cliff she is quarantined and will look that up.
hewittl50 Posted - 14/03/2011 : 17:50:36
I have cleaned out her viv and water bowls and hides and disinfected everything and bathed her in water with washing up liquid I also noticed what looks like dead white skin around her eyes and mouth so washed this off with a wet cotton bud and she is now bac? In her viv on kitchen roll with just the basics I have also ordered some hypoaspis mites from defenders.co.uk incase this doesnt work thanks for the links sandi :)

Sorry, was busy since Thursday, so just saw this.

Hewitt, also look up a product called "Provent-a-Mite." It's a spray that is a safe, proven, and effective treatment if you follow the directions.

If you have any other reptiles, *make sure you quarantine the effected snake right away*. Mites can travel farther than you think.

Good luck,

will be fine to treat while dull, our lad was the same so is not an issue.
hewittl50 Posted - 14/03/2011 : 00:05:52
Thanks gmac she's looking slightly dull compared to normal so she might be coming up to her first shed with me will this still be ok to treat her or should I wait till she has shed I think I will try your method first as I don't think she has got them bad at the moment

not sure how long snake mite eggs take to hatch out but is possible they are just hatched i suppose.

our boa had mites pretty much the same way but seen as he was only a littlun we gave him baths with washing up liquid in, not swished about to get suds but just to create a surface on the water. The same thing can be done with olive oil. this will drown the mites. also is a lot cheaper than the hypoaspis and frontline and works a treat.

and welcome to the forum

Practical reptile keeping has an article on hypoapsis mites (hope I'm aloud to post this lol) in this months issue I was thinking about trying them because there not stressful to the snake how did they work for you? It also says how to treat with frontline so I am going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for the advice sandi so do you think it is definetly mites? I don't see what else they could be they don't seem to be bothering her atall at the moment but i want to get rid of them before they do.

Had this problem recently and its not the easiest thing to sort out.

As for how you get them, it could even be from walking past a shrub in the garden that a small grass snake or indigenous lizard brushed against and hey presto! The snake mite is the same the world over and not particular to one species so could come from anywhere.

I have used Hypoaspid miles, a form of biological control which has been successful to a degree. Look at the royal python forum thread on this. I am now considering using a spray to eliminate the last egg! Front line should work well but be sure to remove the water bowl. if she drinks from it it could be harmfull so just give a small water dish.

Good luck.
