Gutted, came home tonight and checked all 3 to make sure they are all ok and lil man had a small black dot just under his chin. Whipped him out and had a 2nd person confirm it was mites.
Only 2 small dots, both just brushed off so stuck them in selotape for future reference.
I thought i would keep a diary for people in the future and should give a kinda of timescale to things.
This is new to me and i could only do so much tonight.
First thing i have done is to move Samson over to a basic rub. White kitchen paper and a water bowl. Not glamourous and he certainly doesn't like it but it is for his own good.
I have also stripped everything out of his Viv and given it a good clean and disinfection.
I did come across a few more mites. Banging the plastic plants there was a few falling out. I think i found maybe 7-8.
I am hoping that as there are none on him now it maybe as easy as isolate him for a week and strip his viv out completely and start again. We will see 
Next on my list is to bleach/F10 all furniture and viv etc.
I'll also change his kitchen paper daily.
If anybody has any suggestions comments etc i would really appriciate it.

I used permethrin, (lyclear head lice treatment) it worked amazingly well. I sprayed the boa and the viv from top to bottom including all fittings, did this every week for 3 weeks to break the life cycle, then put bleached and sprayed hides back in and used substrate again. All clear now, not a mite in sight! During treatment i had him on paper with only a cardboard box hide, i disposed of each every week. |

I'd delay the second treatment by a bit more, both to give the snake some rest and to make sure the "kill window" is longer. How long does the Callingtins say it remains effective for? |

I did exactly that, treated saturday and will re-treat again on this saturday. Including down he back, top, sides etc. This spray really works. The hypos were there they just didn't have the desired effect. Callingtins did. |

Welly, sorry to hear about this. Try treating again, not only his viv, but the area around it -- these mites can lay eggs outside the viv proper, and will thus re-infest. Also treat any other snakes' vivs and all decor; trash what you cannot treat. After it looks clear, treat one more time to be safe and catch any stragglers.
As for the hypos, maybe you just got a bad batch? |

I hate to sound repetative..but I have been mite free for a while now. Thanx to "hypo aspis miles" I have kept snakes for over 15 years and wish I had known about them years ago. |

I have had good success with callingtons with the rofous beaked. He clear now so hopefully should get mine too. |

Oh Welly, sorry to hear that! Well, if you do admit defeat, it wasn't for lack of trying right.
At least with the shed there will be a temporary reprieve. Good luck on your mission, let us know how things go?

They're back.... Have plenty of callingtons. So i will admit defeat. I dont know if i have transported them over whilst helping out a friends or if i never got them first time round. Either way it's getting sprayed. He shed tonight and his shed was covered in them, lots round the eyes. I'm really surprised as i havent seen any in his viv at all or any on him since i sorted them the last time.

I've just used lyclear (english version of Nix) on boris and his viv, did it yesterday, put him back in on paper and cheched today....mites on the paper but not moving. Thought this to be a good sign until i picked up the boy and found 3 mites crawling on my arm.
Any idea how long this stuff should take?

I Had the hypo/mites overnighted instead of waiting for snail mail. They came on some dry powdery material. They thrive in a very humid enviroment, therefore I believe upon shipping they start to die in their container which states you must use them right away. When I used them I added damp coconut husk and moss into every enclosure except one. within 2 days i noticed the snakes where almost mite free except for the tank that was dry and left out of the process. Eventually i sprayed the tank down and treated it because the mites where huge and one of the snakes stopped eating. Needless to say the quicker they get to you and the humider the envoroment the better..I also followed up one some enclosures with provento-mite..just to be safe....If you use provento mite before introducing hypo aspis..it is pointless..because it continues to work for 3 or 4 weeks after treatment and kills the aspis too. |

Right. As Cliff said. A shed doesn't get rid of mites, but it's great to hear that your inspection shows he's clear. Perhaps get some permethrin and spray the enclosure?

Maybe i spoke too soon. He shed over the weekend and now looks clear of mites, looks much better and have now removed an epic retained cap.
Awesome lil snake now.
I'll get some decent pics soon as he is amazing. Just wish he was mine. |

Permethrin is available as a agarden insecticide over here but im not sure how else it is bought. Another thing i shall be looking into!!! |
