Posted - 21/04/2012 : 00:24:27 I'd probably lean 3.5 years and 1800 grams or more. I passed on breeding a female this year because she was short of 2000 (I'm slowly raising my requirements). |

The above figures were for females. I generally use the same guidelines for males, however.
I've heard of people having success both with cooling and without it. Last year I cooled, this year I did not (though that was due to a technical issue).
I usually see introductions between January 1 and February 15.
Generally, I find that my males keep feeding, but have heard of some refusing -- so it is not abnormal.
A mouse every two months?!? That's horrid! Try giving her another year of regular meals and see how she looks then. Kudos to you for rescusing her from that hell.
Let me know if you have any other questions. |

Posted - 07/03/2012 : 18:11:35 Hey snake sitter, long time no see. Sorry for the absence. Are those weights for both males and females? Is a cooling period needed? What season should you introduce them? I have a 1287g male who has started to slow down on feeding during this past winter. I have never looking into breeding rainbows a whole lot. I know certain species of pythons the males go off food in winter months due to either brumation or breeding drive. Does this apply to brazilian rainbows? My female is highly underweight and I don't know how old she is. The........"gentleman" I got her from fed her maybe a mouse every two months, she looked terrible. She is much better now but only weighs 898g |

2010s are far too young to breed this soon.
In general, the larger the female, the better the results. I know one major breeder who recommends 1500 grams or more for weight, and 2.5 years of age -- but I think those are terribly low levels. I recommend 1800 grams or more for weight, and 3.5 years of age.
You can breed them no more than once a year, but doing do repeatedly will wear a female out and shorten her life.
Looking forward to the picts! |
