http://www.thecornsnake.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7957 That is a treatment you cn start right away. There are other treatments available but have only used the oil bath with washing up liquid not oil (dont froth it though
It will take you to another forum but the treatment works for all snakes not just corns.
And an unfortunate welcome to the site. |

Graeme, geat article. I would add a few minor notes:
1. As rainbow boas love to drink, put the snake in clear (non-oiled) water first for at least five minutes, so that if it drinks, it does so using clean water.
2. Those following this plan should rememeber to treat the area *around* their viv as well, as mites will often lay eggs outside the viv, there to return and plague the snake(s) later.
Meegan, you may also wish to consider predatory mites, which might combine well with this plan as there are no anti-mite meds being used.
Good luck...and a hopeful welcome as well! |

yes the mites can be transferred onto all other snakes. Is best to treat them not until they have vanished but for a good 2-3 weeks after the last one has gone |

Yes, as Graeme notes, mites can spread. Best to treat broadly and be aware. |

If you had them before you can pretty much guarantee that they never went away. There are 4 stages to the life cycle of the mite, the adult stage is the last and the only one you see! You need to break the cycle and treat the whole house.
I used permethrin, (Plant based insecticide) in the form of lyclear head lice treatment, watered down to a ratio of 15ml into 1 litre water. Empty all furniture from viv, spray snake and viv thoroughly, every nook and cranny. The mites like to lay eggs up high in dark crevices so be vigilant! Either throw away or soak in bleach, all furnishings. Put snakey into viv on papar with only a cardboard hide, put clean, small, water bowl in AFTER spraying. Repeat every week for at least 3 weeks.
This worked for me, after trying lots of other methods. Permethrin kills the eggs, other treatments dont. |
