| hi new here but am on trp :) i have a royal and 2 pastels also a king snake baby girl but have just rescued a sand boa 30 cms long unsexed and age unknown :( any help hints ect about the breed would be greatly apprecated :) |

Welcome to the group. What species of Sand Boa do you have?
Sand Boas are a piece of cake and their requirements are dead easy; lots of sand, a small water dish that they cannot tip and some bottom heat. Because you heat them from the bottom, make sure you give them lots of sand to provide a buffer between them and the heat.
They tend not to like too much handling - it's just the nature of their design; they're burrowers, not climbers. Some are really nippy, some will never try to bite. I'm sure you already know which category yours fits in, lol.
Don't let the sand get wet, and if it does, remove it and dry it before reintroducing it - these snakes don't appreciate humidity and an abundance of it will cause a respiratory problem quickly.
They usually eat readily, but some don't take well to dead food. When feeding pre-dispatched prey, you may have to use tongs and drag the mouse's nose lightly in the sand in front of the snakes snout, which will be sticking out of the sand ever so slightly, but you will be able to see it. They're very much a snake that relies upon feel more than sight or smell, so once it feels movement in the sand around it, it'll be on high alert and will gladly snap at anything you put in front of it (fingers included).

CDN Blood i dont know as the woman dosent know she dosent have a clue so im not overly happy but its coming in as a rescue at 9 am today then im going to check its set up and probably go buy more bits i know shes using aspen atm so will buy some snake sand for it :)
wow ill be using my big feeding tongs then hehe dont fancy a bite from one of these fellas :)
will be tryng to get it sexed asap once its settled and fed ect ill pop to my reptile shop and find out , ill alsop post a pic here later incase anyone can identify xx |

POOR GIRLS A STATE !!!! WRONG SET UP AND NO THERMOMETOR SHES IN A VERY BAD SHED TOO SO ILL HELP HER LATER WITH THAT ONCE I BOUGHT SOME SAND AND A BIGGER WATER BOWL

It's a Kenyan Sand Boa. You'll see it's skin change to what it should be like once it's out of those shavings for a spell and in what it really enjoys: sand.
Keep us posted on how it's doing. They're really fun snakes (even though they're not big on handling) and I'm sure you'll enjoy it once it settles-in :)
The height of that ExoTerra tank is lost on such an animal, lol. They're really wouldn't ever use climbing space like that. It's one of the things that make them so easy to care for in that they don't need any accessories at all, just sand. Anything you put in the tank is strictly for your own enjoyment - the snake won't use it. |

thanks hun :)
shes doing great ok with handeling eaten a fluff but took 20 mins of teasing ect lol got her sand flpping £10.49 for a wee little bag but at least shes happy shes an ideal weight for her length and before dinner she had a bath and pillow case her sheds almost off
shes goes in a rub tomorrow the tanks for geckos i think silly woman i got her off didnt have a clue grrr somepeople :@ |

The sand isn't cheap, but it'll last for a long-long-LONG time. Just go through it with a sifter once a week and it'll last years. It's one of the joys of keeping these things. I'd make sure you have lots of ventilation if you opt for a plastic tub - they tend to hold humidity and that's not going to sit well with a Sand Boa's lungs. These are one snake that does really well in an old aquarium with a wire lid so humidity doesn't build-up :) |
