Hi, first post on forum since signed up. Basically, I have a nearly 1year old female Brazilian Rainbow Boa, I've fed her quite alot now since I bought her. She seems to produce a white cream type substance now and then I assume is from her rear? But only 2 or 3 times has the white cream type substance come with actual poo. All 3 times being very large sized poo. Just wondering if this is a problem or is this normal for a BRB of this age etc?!?!?! |

Welcome to the forum!
The white creamy stuff, VXR, is called uric acid. Wikipedia explains it well: "In birds and reptiles, and in some desert dwelling mammals, uric acid also is the end product of purine metabolism, but it is excreted in feces as a dry mass. This involves a complex metabolic pathway that is energetically costly in comparison to processing of other nitrogenous wastes such as urea or ammonia, but has the advantage of reducing water loss."
How long have you had her? Three poos is not a lot for an often-fed animal. Even my relucant ones go at least every third meal. |

thanks very much Snakesitter. It is however happening more regularly now, it might off been about 3 it was a rough estimate, can't exactly remember how many, since I wrote that though she's had about 5. and urined aswell. it might be that then every third meal sounds about right, just I feed her once a week now have done for about 2 months so I don't think that there is anything wrong with her I'm just being over protected because I don't want her to be unhappy or ill :) Thanks. |

I admire your care and caution, and am glad to hear it all worked out. Looking forward to updates with picts (of her, not the wee). ;-) |

Hi, wondering if anyone is able to help me with my concern. I have a female Brazilian Rainbow Boa approximately 18 months old now, and I went to clean out her vivarium yesterday and she had pooped, I do keep ontop of this regularly, it is not kept in the vivarium for over 24hours. However, when I took out the poop I noticed that there were small bugs crawling over it, like silver/white looking bugs. I have looked this up on the internet, and the majority of things say that they have come from the substrate, i use orchid bark with her and I've never noticed it before until yesterday. I have also examined her body, and facial area and there appears to be no sign of her having mites. So I was wondering if anyone could tell me if what I have read is correct, or if I should take a different approach to this? I also read that if it is the bugs that are in the bark and just feeding off the feces, then I have nothing to worry about as they do not harm the snake? feed back asap would be appreciated. Thank you |

VXRossi, so long as the snake is not stressed, you should be fine. I would recommend however you keep a close eye on her viv for the next week and clean up any messes right away, so that the bugs go away as soon as possible due to lack of food. You may also want to consider a new substrate source. |

Thanks SnakeSitter. What other substrate source would you recommend for Brazilian Rainbow Boa's then other than orchid bark? they can be used with news papers can't they? I would fancy something more visually exciting than news paper, what would you suggest? I am going to clean out the whole tank Friday afternoon and replace all of the orchid bark, if you could get back to me asap with a possibly source for substrate that would be great :). definitely going to give it a right clean. I only noticed it because my phone's LED light is VERY bright. I use this to make sure I have gotten all of the poop from her, as I do with all 3 snakes. She isn't stressed at all which is good. Although she didn't eat her last meal, probably due to her color change, I think she maybe entering shedding process. |

I use orchid bark too but have heard that plantation soil is also a good substrate for BRBS and the good news is that it is available in the UK. Think its between £8 and £10. Let us know how you get on. Good luck :) |

Plantation soil works, but I have heard it gets *everywhere*. For visuals, orchid bark and coconut husk seem to work best. For practicality, newspaper and paper towel rule. I ytpically avoid pet stores for substrate purxhasdes and head for garden supply stores. Just make sure to ask what they treat your chosen material with (chemicals, etc.). |

Hey Cliff. I wanted to get Orchid Bark from a garden supply store but what specific questions do I need to ask? |

Dee, ask if it is organic; if not, ask what chemicals and pesticides is is treated with prior to packaging. You may want to check with both the store staff and the supplier as listed on the bag to be safe. |
