Hello everyone, here is my first post on this forum. I have a 6 month old Nicaraguan BCI and was wondering, are there any signs that the snake is about to go into the shedding process apart from dulling of colour or going blue? The reason I'm asking is because it's been in its moss box for a couple of days and hissed at me for the first time when I tried to take it out tonight. The thing that's confusing me is that there are no outward signs of an impending shed. Colours are the same and the eyes are clear and bright. Its breathing is also fine, so it doesn't appear to be a RSI. It also ate a rat pup tonight, although some snakes do eat even when they are about to shed. Royals get pink bellies when they shed. Boas? Hoping our experts can shed some light on this. All the best, Dave
The only real guide for your boa shedding is the dulling of the skin and eyes going blue. the fact es hissing at ou could mean a shed is on its way but not really a trusty guide.
I would also only really add a damp hide when the snake is in the blue phase, they dont need the higher humidity generally other than for shedding.
Thanks for the reply GMac. I read somewhere that Boas need a humidity level of about 50-60%. The damp hide has been in there for a couple of weeks and the boa only just went in there a couple of days ago. It's now out again and hanging on a branch near the IR bulb digesting its meal. I'll keep an eye on it and see how it reacts on Monday.
is there or thereabouts, not quite sure where the humidity level is in the uk but dont think Germany that much more different. The only issue you have is if the boa is in the hide the humidity will be well above that level. Is fine for shedding but wouldnt want it in all the time.
