Hey guys!

Could I ask two questions?

1: my RBR (not named yet) is spending time in her hide which I have put moss in however I am worried that the temp is too low. The viv is heated by a heat lamp and temps are: 82 warm side 72 cool side and 85-90 humidity - I am worried that the only way I can get heat into the hide is with a under tank pad although this may throw the temps out (which appear to be bang on in line with the care sheet). The question is therefore a) how can I check the actual temp of inside the hide? And b) if it is too low how could I raise it?

And....

2: I would like to give her the opportunity to go in the bath with some water ( obviously after a thorough clean) but am uncertain what temp would be best?

Thanks in advance and sorry if these questions have been answered previously but I couldn't find them.

Hi Brian, of course you can ask questions!

For heat, Brazilians enclosures are best heated by undercage elements rather than heat lamps. The bulbs in heat lamps tend to dry the air, creating a secondary problem. Plus, as you noted, the undercage elements heat the hides well. As for checking the hide's temp, do you own a temp gun (the infrared distance models)?

For bathing, I would use water in the mid-70s -- thus, not too hot or too cold. Let her soak in a small bowl first, so that if she is thirsty she drinks that clean water rather than the tub water (which may have trace chemicals even after cleaning).

I hope this helps!

Hey, thanks!

I don't have a temp gun, just several dial thermometers. Sounds like it may be a sound investment though!

Great advice on the bowl idea....I'll try it later.

Thanks again.

Heavens, don't put small snakes in a bath tub unless you want to make the evening news! If you have to leave them unattended for even a moment you can lose them to the overflow drain. Just provide a basin in it's enclosure that's large enough for it to soak in as Snakesitter suggested :)

I would say "all publicity is good publicity"...but in the eyes of certain news agencies, that story would turn into a 15-foot venomous monster with six-inch fangs that ate children and breathed fire. ;-)
