I am totally addicicted  - I have just purchased 2 CB12 Columbian Rainbow Boas to add to my CB11 Brazillian.
These babies are currently feeding on pinkie mice (according to seller) and they weigh 20g and 21g, I was wondering how soon I can move them onto Rat pups (Brazillian weighs 40g and is on Rat pups).
Next question is what would be the next step for the Brazillian and at what weight?

| A Brazilian that weighs 40 grams should be on rat pinkies, not rat pups. I only move my Brazilians to rat pups at 150 grams....and before that they are on rat fuzzies for a while. Go by the snake's width on a fully empty belly rather than weight, which I use only as a rough guide. At 20 and 21 grams, a mouse pinkie is probably correct. Wait until they get up to 30 grams before you consider a switch to rats, and even then go with pinks not fuzzies or pups. |

I think what I call rat pups are actually rat pinkies, as they have no fur and are about the equivalent size of a mouse fuzzie - they are what the breeder was feeding my Brazillian before I bought him. He has no problem with them and only leaves a smallish 'bump'.
I would rather be cautious with the food size than give something too big and cause a problem. |

| You are probably correct, as rat pinks are the only size with no fur at all. They weigh about six grams on average. There is a good table showing food sizes and weights here: http://www.bigcheeserodents.com/Pricing.html. By contrast, rats pups average around 25 grams, which would be enormous for a small Brazilian. It'd be like me eating a watermelon. In one bite. ;-) You are absolutely correct to feed with caution...it will avoid serious problems. Well done! |
