It's been a while, and Tiny is growing on a bit now. Over the past month ive been struggling to find any glas terrariums suitable for a rainbow boa due to screen tops, and all plastic vivaria i see online are american only, they dont ship to UK Anyway. Ive decided I'm going to get a Vivexotic viv and line the inside with either perspex or fablon and seal the corners to avoid moisture coming into contact with the chipboard. A few thing i want to ask about this though... Which model should i keep him in full time? Vx or Lx? And 36inch or 48inch? And also, I know heat bulbs & ceramics dry out the air in the viv, so i want to avoid using these for Tiny's sake, I'm toying with the idea of a heatmat (obviously with thermostat and themometers) but how would this work with a wooden viv? Can i put it inside or would the risk of my snake burining himself be too high? Would having a heatmat outisde a wooden viv be efficiant enough?? Last question. Would using fablon as an interior be okay? Its a plastic surface with a self advhessive back and if sealed correctly in the corners i think it might work? I'm hoping to have the viv built by the end of sept, Tiny's swiftly outgrowing his RUB!
Sorry for all the questions and thank's in advance for any answers. I appreciate it! :)

Dingir, I thought someone found a plastic viv avilable in the UK. Does anyone else remember that thread...or am I losing it? ;-)
As for your planned adaptation, I can answer two of your four. Adult rainbows require at least six square feet of floor space, so I would go with that at a minimum. I've never used a heat mat with a wooden viv, and am unsure how well it work through the dual layers of wood and lining -- have you considered a radiant heat panel?
Good luck! |

Hey,
On the note of heat mat and wooden viv, the heat would not penetrate the wood so the heat at would need to be inside, some keepers have found ingenious ways of doing this by creating a tile or glass layer above the mat...
I use a glass exo terra ATM which I adapted the screen top by using polystyrene sheets over the screen and cover them with cling film, I also insulated the back panel with a polystyrene sheet and successfully maintain good temps and humidity, the key is to embrace the use of moss and a large water dish over the heat source!
There are a few pics of my setup in this thread

If possible I would go for th 48 inch as that will last longer and save a viv change.
Hope this helps

There was a thread (or two) regards plastic vivs in the uk - so no, not losing it just yet snakesitter
I know Penine do plastic vivs and can be purchased in the UK. Also Procages http://pro-cages.com/index.php/en/cages-and-prices and another company I have found: http://www.hendersons.co.uk/vivarium/vivarium_index.html I think there are more but can't remember the thread and haven't the time just now to search for it |

Thanks for replies... Did a bit of research on these Pennine Plastic vivs, and was just wondering how do people provide heat for the boa in these? From what ive read they melt and warp just with the use of a heatmat? Could anyone tell me if the Plastic surface cover for inside a wooden viv may work aswell please? :) |

Phew. Thanks Sue, I was getting worried. ;-)
Dingir, could you post the link you read that in, please? It's be nice for other people to be able to find.
Afraid I can't help you with the other questions, however -- no experience in that area. :-( |

Of couse I can!
http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/compare-housing/Pennine-Plastic-Vivarium/reviews/ most of the reviews here say these vivs melt or warp with high temps or heatmats...
And not to worry about the othe questions. Check out the other thread. The eco vivs look good, and not as expensive as pro cages.... the 3 ft x 24" x 24" would be right for an adult CRBam i right? :)

Yes, six square feet of floor space is enough for even a Brazilian adult.
Thank you for the link!!! |
