Mouth rot is an infection in a snake's mouth. It is fairly uncommon in Brazilians, but certainly not unheard of. So long as it is caught and treated early -- as in this case -- the prognosis for recovery is excellent. Here is a writeup, though not specific to snakes: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=17 1831&aid=2385.
Edit: the link will not work properly? There is a missing "+" that should come between the 17 and the 18. |

It sounds like it was a minor case and you caught it early. :-) |

How long has it been since you started home treatmet and since she ate? A vet visit may be in order to tie the treatment up. They can also "tube feed" her while there to get some calories into her. |

Looking back at the thread, he has not eaten for you since early July, and has been under treatment since August 9 or so? If that timing is correct, a vet visit may be in order, just to be sure. If you have a local herp society, ask them for a good reptile vet recommendation -- it needs to be someone experienced with these animals, as their care is very different than cats or dogs. As for getting worried, the best thing you can do is keep calm. Remember, snakes can go a long time without food! Just remember to ask about tube feeding as well, to give him a bit of extra calories. I'm sure all will be fine. :-) |

Awww, Hidenshi, I am SO very sorry for Niiji's passing. Don't beat yourself up over it, you did the best you could with everything you had. It is likely that she was given to you with the mouth rot and it was only a matter of time. Some can fight it off, but many do not make it...especially if they can't eat. Your poor lady will stay in my thoughts and you too. *HUGS* |

Thanks for your kind words....I do still want another BRB..but I should be careful next time and always be aware of the mouth area...and instead of ordering it online, I should just buy one at the store here. I still feel as if I am a bad snake owner. |

You most certainly are not! I know it is hard not to think you are, but you did everything you could to save Niiji. It just wasn't mean to be and she just couldn't fight it off in time to be saved. :( I do agree that you need to be very careful of who you get your next one from, though. Find a good, reputable breeder if at all possible (I dunno of any breeders in the UK, myself, but maybe someone else does and can suggest one) and then go from there. Even store bought snakes can have a multitude of health issues, so be really selective and careful. I really am so very sorry for your loss, though. I know you really loved your little girl. |
