We are thinking of ways to increase the humidity in Ruby's viv and wondered if using live plants in there would help?
They would be planted in a coco background so we can still use orchid bark as a substrate and we'll be researching the plants before hand to make sure they are safe to use.
Anyone got any thoughts?
We think if nothing else, they'll look good and the coco background itself should keep in the moisture. |

| aloes are safe but probably be best to use the less spikey ones. i've also heard of people using ivy as it does ok with less daylight |

Lewy uses peace lillies and this special type of mossy/grassy plant with his toads, because they handle low light and high humidity well too.
Whatever I use, I'll have to check they are safe for little rainbows. Lewy's finished creating his new tank for the pacman he's getting, so he can start doing Ruby's tank tonight. I'll let you know how we go on. |

Here's the viv we have set up for Ruby. It's only got one live plant in it, as we decided that plastic was safer.
What do you think? We haven't put her in it yet, because we still don't know if she'll be ok in there. We are certain everything in there is safe, but just cautious because no one else keeps their RBs in similar set ups. |

That looks really cool Kaz  i know lilies can be harmful to cats but just the flowers not rest of the plant/leaves. might be worth googling? of just removing flowers when they appear just to be on the safe side?
I've literally thrown a huge aloe vera plant in with Birch and Spruce yesterday! i had 2 on top of their big viv, then they ended up on the bedroom floor as the viv top was taken up with RUBs, now i still can't find space for them so got rid of one inside the viv. the aloes are so big i can't really fit both inside and they certainly won't fit in any of the other vivs! |

That's ok GP- the lillies are fake
Only the monster swiss cheese plant is real and Lewy says that is safe for amphibians, so I'm guessing it's safe for snakes too.
Lillies are bad apparrently. Lewy has just been told on the amphibian to be careful with the peace lilly, because if the crickets eat the peace lilly, then the toads or frog eat the crickets then it can poison them. We are alright though because lewy feeds his toads personally with tongs so crickets don't get chance to feed before getting devoured. Worth knowing though, so we can warn others. |

I have been thinking about doing the same, let me know if you get a definitive list of good plants. someone has mentioned umbrella plants in the past.
Maybe as chameleon owners, as they seem to specialise in live planting for the sake of humidity |

| That's what made us think of it. We put the live plants in to keep the humidity up for the toads, so thought why not for the Rainbow Boa? |
