hi everyone, just recently joined the forum and have a question already. ive had Archie in his viv for a couple of days now and i can get the temp just about right but im worried that the humidity is too high. the humidity is sitting at around 90% at both the warm and cool end. ive read on some online care sheets that too much humidity can lead to health problems but no mention of what health problems. can anyone shed any light on my situation??

if the humidity is too high it can cause respiratory infections (RIs), but the degree of humidity varies greatly between species. the rainbow boas' requirement is high humidity but as i don't keep them i don't know what percentage specifically. does the caresheet on here tell you? |

the caresheet on this forum says that the colombian should get between 75-80% humidity but a little more is better than less which is what ive got at the moment so quite happy about that. dont know what website it was that said too much was harmful but it was the only one that did so dont think i'll be refering back to it anytime soon!cheers for the advice. bob |

It depends on the age of the rainbow really. When young they need really high humidity so 80-90 should be a minimum. Adults can handle a bit less but it still needs to be 75 at least.
I know that other snakes can have too much humidity, but rainbows are used to it and can actually die if it falls below 50. I'd still to high rather than going too low.
How do you control humidity? Can you mist a little less often? |

Hi i just wanted to post and say, is it a digital hydrometer? as i have 1, and when you leave it in the tank and it gets wet, it will read higher, i now have a manual one in the tank at all times and place the digital one in there after misting and now get more accurate humidity readouts. |

im using a 2 in 1 thermo-hygrometer to monitor the temp and humidity at both ends. i mist between 2-3 times a day, ive had a play around with the position of the water dish which is what i think may have been causeing the high humidity as it is quite a large dish (think its suppose to ba a cat litter tray!)and was close to the heat mat so this seems to have helped a bit |

I have a digital hygrometer, and I feel like its pretty accurate, but I'm curious, where do you get a manual hygrometer? Did your hygrometer get wet because you were misting it? |
