As we all know, high humidity and wood just dont go together.
Does anyone know of a reptile safe way to protect wooden branches with a stain, wood preserver or varnish so i can have wooden climbing logs etc in my viv without having to worry about them going mouldy?
Do any of you keep wooden viv decor, if so how do you maintain it?

You *could* varathane your wood if you really wanted to, but I don't recommend it and I'd certainly make sure it's well-cured before being introduced into an enclosure. I would also only do this for a more open enclosure, not something with low ventilation.
I use real wood in every enclosure, and it's cleaned by good old-fashioned elbow grease and a scrub brush. I've never been one of the 'I'll clean it later' types, so it works well for me and it's easy to keep clean using the clean right away approach, but that might not make sense for some folks.
For higher humidity enclosures, I'd probably use plastics because untreated wood will mould quickly under low ventilation conditions, and that is the last thing you want.
If it's a wooden enclosure that is the problem, a good coating of melamine paint does the trick, but again, when using these things with live animals, make good and sure it's properly cured and no longer emitting fumes before using. |

Thanks for the reply.
I have a wooden enclosure but i have lined it with poycabonate as in the How to section of this site.
Since doing that my humidity has been really goood but the air exchange has gone down, after a few days i noticed my wooden climbing/hide log was a bit furry on the bottom. I have taken it out now.
It was fine in the hot/dryer end of the viv but now it is more humid all of the time i think it just too much for it.
Might just have to give up with it and either get some plants or somthing rock or plastic for my BRB to hide under at the warm end.
Shame, my viv looked really good too. |
