The pet shop where I got my new little brb told me she/he was eating a mouse fuzzy once a week and could probably move up to crawler mice soon (he/she is about 2ft long and weighs 50g) I've noticed people are feeding rat pups and was wondering if these are a better choice of food for a brb? |

Rats are slightly better meals for your BRB, Dont see any harm in trying to move across to rat pups. |

I agree. You will eventually need to move your Brazilian to rats anyway, as it takes *several* adult mice to provide the same meal volume as one single medium rat! |

Well, gave her a 10g smallish rat pup tonight, and after a little bit of persuasion and tongs wiggling she ate it. So hopefully the move from mice to rats has been smoothly executed! |

Sorry to jump in on your post emmy but if i started a new topic it would be very similar to yours and i am very sure that the info would be of use to you too.
I have just made the change from mouse fluffs to large rat pups, My brb was eating 4 fluffs in one sitting. She has taken the rat pup with no problems. How many rat pups should she have now i have made the switch, i am led to believe that rats have a higher calorific value.
Opinions please. |

I would go by weight, Stephen. I always forget what "fluff" translates to in US jargon: if a (mouse) fuzzie, then those are usually around 5-6 grams (up to 10-11), whereas (rat) pups are usually around 27-28 grams (up to 35). Assuming your fluffs were average size, I'd drop it back down to an average pup and realize she's getting around five in one go. |

Right, got it. I will just go by weight then, thanks.
Am i right in assuming that a snake will not take more food than whet it needs? i.e. if she takes 2 pups, she obviously wants/needs 2 pups?
I regularly get my snake out give her plenty of exercise so i dont think she will get obese or anything.
What do you think? |

Remember that snakes have evolved to eat whenever and as much as they can, because in the wild the next meal is never guaranteed. I would tread with caution and keep it to one for most feeding sessions, especially if she took less than one pup in food equivalent before. Todd/Joe, any thoughts? |

Hiya
I work on feeding all my snakes on the 10-15% of its bodyweight theory, has worked fine for me so far, zeus is fed every 5 days still

Hi Martin, Noticed you say you feed every 5 days, how old is your brb? Mine is under a year and I've been feeding once every 7 days, should it be every five? Thanks, Emmy |
