Is it just me, or is English being forgotten as a result of too much texting?
It can be really difficult to decipher messages without proper capitalization, punctuation and full words rather than lazy abbreviations.
I don't know if it annoys anyone else as much as it annoys me, but I tend to not even read a post with has those characteristics, let alone respond to one.
As far as I'm concerned, if you can't take the time to write a proper message, why should I waste my time responding to it?
There, I feel better already <insert snicker here> :) |

Pishaw, I say. Pishaw! It's got nothing to do with age, it's about effectively communicating.
I actually stopped a friend of over 10 years from emailing me anymore because she reverted to Text Lingo and it always took longer to figure out what she was trying to say than it was worth. I got tired of the one long, rambling paragraphs that I had to dissect and reassemble before I could understand them. We only talk on the phone now, lol.
It's a really terrible habit :( |

Do agree it is about communicating properly and making things clear for others to understand your issues or replies, I must admit I do find it difficult to respond to text type as Im usually frustrated just reading the email, post or text that my brain, whats left of it, doesnt like me anymore and wont play nice. |

I hate to say it but its an age thing. We either try to keep up or get left behind. In most cases people choose to get left behind and become bitter hags like the ones they mocked when young. Im a 34 year old young profesional, and I deal with bitter old people that hate my gen. and any generation after their own,and if they cant keep up with my texts, emails ,facebook posts or any modern media they get replaced. That goes for buisness and personal life. you would be surprised at the sheer # <-- (abreviation btw ..is this kosher ...lmao)of people who have adapted and embraced modern technology, I place orders for my restaurant worth thousands of dollars weekly via text with no caps no punctuation I really dont care if the sales rep likes it or not..I make it a point to order that way if they have a problem with it..lol If I had to waste my time spell checking everything I ever posted or typed my secretary would be out of a job, and Id lose my mind. let alone have to use punctuation on forum or text...really?????? All I can say is you had your turn, assimilate or get out of the way.. or stop crying about it either way... |

Firstly do not ever tell anyone on this site to assimilate or get out of the way or to stop crying about it, you are not in any position to do this it shows a complete lack of respect for the members, well established members at that. Any more comments like that and there will be repercussions.
Secondly, if people are posting for advice or replying does it really cost that much to type correctly, I'm pretty sure modern technology has all the letters of the alphabet, including vowels, required to type messages correctly. Like other forums we are multi national and as such things can be lost in translation of common words let alone text type and I dont just mean non English speaking countries, I find sometimes even between UK and North America, meanings can differ so why muddy the waters even further.
It is better to be clear in what you are asking for or replying to, so shortcuts are not the best way to get this across. Spelling mistakes are natural so I'm not really all that concerned about misspelled words
So I shall end by saying text talk is not acceptable on this forum, if people want advice they can ask properly.
Admin note: This does not turn into a slanging match I have enough to do at the moment keeping unwanted members from posting to have to worry about arguments between members. This is a small community, and a bloody good one that I enjoy make sure it stays that way please.

I didnt find my post to be as inflamitory as YOU made it seem, I meant no disrespect by my post in any way, I just typed the truth. How are you going to moderate how people post? I would like to know that?...Are you all going to get together and not answer a question that is typed in text talk? Im sure someone will answer it regardless of your makeshift rules. If not there are far better sites that can accomodate.. Im positive.

Text typing was started to prevent mobile phone companies charging you for multiple messages where you run over so many characters per message, this forum does not work this way if you are paying to use this forum on a phone the mobile company does not charge you per message to it im pretty sure its a lump sum payment each month therefore there is no need for text type.
Im sure all posts will be answered yes, but then you have to look at the people not answering these posts as the experience they have really is extensive and is unfortunate if the poster does not get replies from them.
As for makeshift rules and how I will admin / mod them my forum my rules they are non negotiable. I shall continue to admin this site the way i have been, or if you prefer I shall not bother with it and just let everything run freely, I wont really as I enjoy this site. Every forum has rules even the ones that are better than this one.
As for you thinking "All I can say is you had your turn, assimilate or get out of the way.. or stop crying about it either way..." is not inflammatory Im afraid when our members are spoken to in that manner it is inflammitory.

Being 22 I grew up with a lot of txt talk on instant messages and mobile phones, while I was a teenager I used to txt talk all the time.
Now I can barely understand half of it, I still use the old abbreviations as I honestly believe they make things easy such as 'brb' and 'lol' etc. But shortening words because it takes 0.1 second longer to type the whole thing I just find childish whenever I see somebody typing like it on a forum I assume they are under 14 and i'm always surprised when they're actually a 40 year old in a professional job, it's hard to tell if it's a professionalism thing or an intelligence thing, I believe it differs from person to person I find people with rather a poor vocabulary tend to txt talk more but that can't be the world reason. I guess a lot of it is just plain laziness.
However on a forum it is pretty important to type correctly and get your point across as crystal clear as you can, it was mentioned earlier about not replying to txt talk, well I don't, that might make me uncaring but hey i'm not a mod or admin it's not my job to decipher txt talk. |

Like Kelfezond, I'm about the same age (23.. a OLE year!! Phoneshop reference anyone?!) and I think everyone went through a phase of speaking like that, but as Gmac points out, it was to curb massive text message charges really... then it just sort of meandered into lazyness, and that's how I view it now really. Especially in the professional world I think it's unacceptable. Abreviate to friends in short messages is fine, but I think when you're asking peoples help, and expecting them to take time to try and help you, it's only fair to try and act respectably.

Your still dwelling on my comment making a bigger deal out of it than it really is...besides at no point did I question how you run this site..I happen to enjoy it very much and have recieved a lot of usefull information in the short 2 years I have been a member."All I can say is you had your turn, assimilate or get out of the way" was a generalization for the unsavvy tech. But no matter.. I will curb my posting...btw I could careless for the history of how text typing came to be...im pretty sure we are all guilty of using it at one point or another. smh lmfao |
