Probably a stupid question but where is the best placement for the thermometer?
I have an Exoterra digital thermometer and currently have the probe situated in the centre of the viv about 3" off the deck. with my dimmer thermostat set its showing a steadyish 86°f in the middle. clearly it'll be warmer at the hot end and cooler at the other.
I'm just unsure if the recommend temperature of 85° is at its hottest area or average/central area
many thanks in advance |

Chris, the probe should be at the bottom of the tank in the middle of the heated area, which is where the snake would usually be if it was seeking warmth. Placing it in the middle of the viv will allow the hot side to become too hot.
Also, use 82F as the hottest point, not 8F. Temps of 85F and above can kill your rainbow! |

That's great, thanks cliff.
I've moved the probe and adjusted the temperature accordingly. Although I wasn't far off, with a central temperature of 78°, the warm end is showing 81° :-)
Thanks again for the pointer, I'm sure I'll be back with more questions soon!
