| I got my BRB about 2 months ago and she was excellent. Never struck and wasn't even head shy. But all of the sudden about 3 weeks ago she turned mean. I have no clue whats going on with her but i need to figure it out. She use to be a show snake. They would take her to schools and show her off and stuff like that. Since she turned mean we have isolated her and put her in a room with no traffic. The only time we mess with her is to feed her and clean her water bowl. Any ideas? |

It could be the change in scenery I know its 2 months down the line but new smells can sometimes trigger them off. Took us 2 months to figureout an oil burner we had on another room irritated the bci we have.

| I was thinking the scenery also but she is just getting worse I did have a oil burner about 10 feet away from her cage but she was moved away from it about a month ago |

Jon, could it be due to breeding season? Sometimes the females start acting odd around this time of year.
It could also be due to a climate change -- temps off, humidity off, storm system, etc. You sound like you are very on top of such things, but you may want to double check anyway.
Regardless, iolating her for too long may backfire: once she learns that striking at you will get her left alone, she will never stop.

| I don't think it has anything to do with the breeding season but that is a good point. And, I have no way of testing the humidity in her cage, my gauge stopped working and I have yet to purchase another one so that may be it. IDK, I'm gonna get her out tonight regardless if she is gonna bite or not. I will update you with a video of me getting her out. Maybe, you all will get to see someone get bit. lol |

Common misconception!
Snakes aren't really "agressive" rather, "Defensive"
A cage defensive snake will go into defensive mode when you reach into the tank because they feel threatened by a giant hand coming from the sky grabbing at things.
Same with being held or put back, if the snake feels scared, it might strike you, thats purely out of fear or confusion and being defensive. If the snake was "agressive" it'd be chasing you around the cage trying to grab at your hand, but its not, it just nips if you go near it, right?
Exactly!
So, keep with the mentality of the snake learning that your hands wont hurt it in any way, this is why constant handling (and persistent even if bitten) handling teaches the snake to not be afraid, rather than not "attack" you.
good luck! im working on my first boa right now, and shes very cage defensive, nippy as hell, striking everywhere, then as soon as I'm holding her she chills out completely and realized she isn't in danger at all. |
