Hi I'm hearing different opinions on what substrate I shud use for my sand boa I'm getting on sat. Some say sand but alot of owners I've spoke to use standard substate that would be used for corns can anyone offer me advice on this?
I think it's up to personal choice. As long as you know the pros and cons of each of the different types of substrate and make an informed choice there is nothing to stop you trying it.
You could use sand for a few weeks then use aspen for the same amount of time and see which you and your snake seems to prefer.
Just be aware that sand can cause impaction (a blockage in the digestive system) so it's important to feed outside the viv when using it (although I would recommend that practice with all substrates really).
Hey Thanks for the reply. From what ive been told a few people would reccomend trying both or maybe a 50/50 split. I personally would prefer aspen but since the sand boa likes to burrow i would want to cause it stress by making that difficult for him. But ive spoke to other sand boa owners and they all use aspen but the place im getting them from keep them on sand. I read about that sand can cause problems if inhaled or eaten tho i wasnt planning on feeding him in the viv anyways.
I think if it was me I would go for Aspen too, but I'm going to ask my mate what he uses for his sand boa too. If I direct him this way he might have already done the experimentation on what they like best
Okay cool if you or him can let me know that would be great. If the majority use aspen and thats what iv ebeen recommended ill use that. Im new to snake keeping, my GF has a corn so hearing what other people would use especially those who own healthy sand boa's is really helpfull. :)
I have a 2 year old KSB that has about 6 inches of sand as a substrate. This has caused no problems up to now although she has recently stopped feeding. I'm booking her in for an x-ray just to make sure there is no impaction. She is fed outside of her viv but I am now worried that due to her subteranean life she may have ingested sand whilst tunneling.
