Tigers Eye
Overview Born in August 2009, so now ten months old, Tigers Eye – named for a reflective gemstone that runs yellow-brown to red-brown with a silky luster – was one of eleven 2009 acquisitions spread over two breeders. She is half-sister to Citrine through a shared father, and therefore half sister to Topaz as well. She currently weighs 188 grams. There was no prior quarter to compare against.

Topaz
Overview Born in September 2007, so now 2.75 years old, Topaz – named for a gemstone whose orange morph is fittingly known as “precious topaz” – was one of three 2007 acquisitions. My first Brazilian ever, she is also the most handling- and picture- friendly of all my adults. She currently weighs 1731 grams. This represents a 256g/17% increase from her last weigh-in three months ago. In the quarter before that, she gained 225g/18%.

Note the above shots are from last quarter – as Topaz is now an adult, she does not change as much quarter to quarter, and so I only trouble her for photographs twice a year. I hope no one feels cheated. ;-) |

Thank you! I've got another load of new arrivals on the way, all designed to fill in the few gaps and (weaker) animals in the collection. Should be a good year! |

Excellent collection and fantastic photos. I think you should submit the best of jasper to a snake magazine!!!
I find it mad that diffrent pics of the same snake, make the snake look like a diffrent color shade. This surely makes a diffrence when trying to establish a BRB's exact morph when taking pics. The naked eye always tells the truth....am i right??

Thank you! She’s a good-looking animal for sure, the best bullseye specimen I’ve seen. (I looked at the two bullseye-heavy babies her parents produced for 2010, and think she is a stronger pick than both.) I just need to work some color into her line and great things will result. By the way, she’s growing by leaps and bounds, and has gotten a bit darker to boot. Those silver eyes contrast beautifully with the dark mask of her face.

LOL thanks. I’m a Brazilian specialist, and moreover one focused on breeding top-tier (and only top tier!) normals. No current plans to offer boring brown babies, or to expand beyond rainbows....though one morph, hypos, are in the plans.

Thank you! I’m coming up on quarterly photos for all of them, so we’ll see if anything good crops up, for Jasper as well as a few others.

Brazilians are one of the toughest snakes out there to photograph. They change looks depending on camera angle, degree of lighting, angle of lighting, time of day (e.g., whitewalling), and more. I don’t white balance my camera, which is part of the problem, so my outside shots and inside flash shots are always much more color-consistent than my inside no-flash ones.

Yes, it does -- but even then the above factors will drive your perception. For example, Brazilians always look more red in outside light, so what looks like a dull brown snake inside might seem much more colorful outside in strong sunlight. If you catch the right time of day, when the angle of the light catches and refracts in the snake’s scales, you will also notice the iridescence much more, which can further bias your judgment. That’s why it’s so hard to judge even in- person visits across different vendors and times. A challenge, but worth it! |
