i recently purchased a male adult brazilian rainbow boa from a local pet shop, i brought him home and placed him in his new home and he seemed fine and went to his water bowl drinking for about five minutes, but now five days down the line he doesnt seem to be moving from his bathing shelf not even to drink, the humidity is at 75-85, waters changed everyday and i even tryed turning the temp up a little bit to see if thats why he was seeking heat on the bathing shelf. if i pick him up he seems lively and loves to wrap himself around my arm and legs but soon as hes back in his tank he goes morbid, i tryed feeding him today and he just sat on his shelf lookin at the rat and didnt even atempt to go and investigate. im rather worried about him any ideas?? |

Hi you need to leave your adult brb to settle in for 7days and the feeding issue could come down to that as well or it could be the time of the year as during this time of the year the males go off there food but not all go off there food. |

thanks alot, it was just i was worried about his water intake because of dehydration but i guess when hes ready he will go to his bowl and drink. iv even moved him into a quet place of the living room as he was centre of attention and could see people constantly walking in and out wich wouldnt make him feel secure. so if he doesnt eat this rat ill just try him again in a week or so?? or should i wait another two weeks? |

Hi Streety. Congratulations on an excellent choice of pet, and welcome to the forums!
There could be several reasons for your snake’s behavior.
The easiest could be that he’s headed into shed. Did the store tell you when his last time was? Has his color dulled and/or his belly turned slightly pink? If so, that would explain all these behavior right there: little movement, no feeding interest, etc.
If it’s not shed, environment would be the next option. You mentioned he’s new and was in a high-traffic area. Either of these could make him into a recluse, so you were right to move him. Your humidity sounds fine, but you did not mention temps. What are those levels? Does he have a hide? What type of lighting is he subject to, and for how long each day?
As Ash noted, he will need about a week to settle in before offering food. Rainbows can go months without food, so there is no cause to worry at this point. Leave him alone as much as possible during this time. Changing the water every day may be stressful: unless he’s soaked or pooped in it, once a week should be fine.
Anyway, the fact that your new arrival drank right away means he knows where the water is, and the fact he is lively and has a good grip when held are positive signs….so need to worry too much.
Looking forward to your answers, |

hey, yes hes kind of durin shed now his eyes was blue but yesterday his eyes returned to black but no skin was shed anywhere in the tank and his body is still dark as if hes ready to shed, the temp was at 28-29 degrees C, and at night lowered to about 25 degrees but i uped it to around 29-30 so he had a hot side and a cool side due to him not moving from his shelf where the heat sorce was, the feedin may be the shedding and as for the water im goin to leave it for less changes as hes not using it so he doesnt get stressed with me always in his tank but i have to keep the daily spraying the tank to keep a high humidity but he just hides behind some vines when i do that, and as for handling im goin to leave him a week or so untill i next get him out so hes more used to his surroundings befor hes gettin botherd by people. |

The issue sounds like primarily shed (which he's about to do, 48 hours or less is my mark) and secondarily temps (too high: your *max* should be 28-29, as high temps can kill these snakes). By the way, you said you raised it so that he has a warm and cool side. What is the temp at the coolest point in his viv? Agreed on the feeding being related to shed, fewer water changes, and less handling. (Misting is fine, keep it up.) |
