Hello,
I have just got myself the most stunning 3yr old BCI. I thought i was re-homing him until i saw his viv and general housing conditions, now i know this has been a rescue case.

He has been kept at 76f in the hot end, there was urate in his water dish, his viv was dirty, no thermometer or hygrometer.....the list goes on.

He is now having a settling in period so I am desperately trying to put off handling him. (Tough going on me)

Meanwhile, I have spent a small fortune getting all the bits and pieces he needs, (have a royal too so i know what I'm doing but no expert) got digi therms on order, hygro, new hides, orchid bark, small rats in freezer. He has a ceramic bulb with a habistat temp stat and I,m checking the temp with a laser gun until the digi therm arrives. Putting in a viewing light tomorrow, hubby is a sparky so no worries!!!

Anything i have missed?
I would very much appreciate any tips on looking after this fella. Like i said, i have a royal and she is a star! so this guy just had to come home, my family is complete!

Oh, and by the way, he is 4ft long and seems quite leen for his length. What would a rough guide on weight/length by age be for a BCI?

Hi and welcome.
Am assuming this is the one you went to look at that you said about on TRP.
Glad you got him now if he was in that state.

All I can suggest is that you keep him in full quarantine for a good 3 months as well.
Rough guide on weight/length???? Not a clue to be honest, nice and chunky and quite heavy would be what i'd say.

If you can post a pic or 2 then we might be able to help, if not I believe I'm only up the road from you so would happily pop round (or you to mine) to have a looky for you.

Hi and welcome Sandi , and as Kehhlyr has mentoined nice on the rescue and as you have a royal i would definately agree with the quarantine.

the only other thing I would add is to not keep it on orchid bark for now, but have it on paper even if its newspaper, it helps see if anything is moving about that shouldn't be likes of mites.

Thanks, good tips and I wouldnt have thought of either of them so appreciate that.
My royal is kept in a different room so by quarantine, do you mean not handling her either? or just being extra clean. Obviously need to change water in both vivs so cant avoid opening doors.

This morning he is lying in his water dish which is in the hot end, he doesnt fit in it fully so should i get him a bigger dish? I gather they like to bath more than royals?

He is on paper at the moment so will hold off the orchid bark. Never actualy seen mites before (luckily)can they be seen easily?

Kehhlyr, yes that was me on TRP and yes if you are local to me i would like to meet up, is there a private message option on this forum or should i email you?

with quarantine it is better if they are in separate rooms yes, boas are know IBD carriers and if it has got it, your royal is at risk from this. Which is fatal.

Handling is fine, however good hygene practive between animals is a must.

Would also take the water from the hot end and move to the cold end, this will only raise the humidity, thats pretty much not needed.

Mites can be seen yes, but not easily if they move on the white paper yes you will see them, also in the waterbowl they can be seen as little black dots.

Will move water bowl now, Florences water is cold end and humidity is fine so will do the same for Boris.....daft name i know but its stuck!

Thanks again guys, kehhlyr, I will email you in a mo!

poor boy has mites! Help please! What do i use to treat him?

Just fitted a viewing light in his viv and now i can see just how shabby it all looks in there too but the first thing i noticed was a few black dots in his water and then saw some crawling on the wood above his head.

Sorry to hear Boris has mites!

Its not something I have experience of myself but I know Zoo meds mite off can be used, although I've heard mixed reviews on its effectiveness.
I know my local 'pets at home' sells mite off so you would probably be able to get some this evening if you have a P@H near you, also worth a look & usually available in P@H is Beaphar insect spray which contains ivermectin.

The best course of action will be to consult a vet asap.

You could also do a google search but as with anything on the internet you will get a variety of cures/treatments with lots of contradictory advice & results.

Don't forget Boris' enclosure will also require treating.

Thanks for that mez, have done the usual google search and ur right, reams of non conclusive stuff but looks like frontline may be of use and possible more effective than some. Anyone got experience of this?
Thankfully i am off work this week, meant to be working from home but instead im devoting it to boris!

Had intended to have a little cuddle with Florence the RP tonight, too paranoid to go near her now. Soooo p***ed off!

You could try posting a thread in the health section, might get a little more response.
