hey every one
i have been having trouble feeding one of my brb's as i have mentioned on here before when i got this brb it was housed with a much larger brb and i have now gave it its own viv and left it alone for about 2 weeks with tryin to feed every sunday and it still wont eat
im getting a little worried now as i have tried every thing when i got this of its last owner they said they had to force feed it some times which i know is bad for a snake
i have brained the mice feed at night feed at day it just never seems interested at all and i am leaving the mice in the viv all night to see if it helps at all but i doubt it will my next step is to find a reptile vet as i just dont know wot else to do it looks like its loosing weight i havnt had it long but i keep track of all its wieghts and stuff but nothing has change in the two weeks i have had it
i just want to know if any one has had this trouble or knows any solutions before i see a vet
it is a very friendly brb and i really dont know what else to do i havnt had this much trouble with any of my other snakes
any advice or any thing would be much appriciated

can you tell us about the housing and setup size of housing temps humidity etc you have, it may help us give you a better response.
If it isnt loosing weight its not really worth a trip to the vets just yet, you could try scenting the mice with other prey items such as rats chicks or even tuna etc.
My biggest concern is the fact the previous owners having to force feed the snake. But if you give us some more info as asked above we may be able to help. |

| well the humidity is at 75% and the hot side is 84c and cool side is 73c and the brb is of a young age roughly a year the viv i put a pic up on pics section its prob not ideal |

i would consider scenting the mouse with chick blood as a first option, take a chick and leave it in with the mouse to defrost, then make a slit and dip the mouse in the blood, gory i know but needs must and all that. Then offer to your BRB. Is only the first step we will take but is a start.
edit, would also try to raise the humdity a bit is on the low end of the scale for BRB's |

yea ill do the chick thing thats no prob so wot sort of humidity do you reckon is best i thought 70%-75% was recommended and can i get chicks from normal reptile shops?

| aim for your humidity at about 80%+ as its a youngun and you can pick chicks up at most rep shops yes, and they are pretty cheap, (no pun in tended) |

| yea thats great stuff ill def get sum for its next feed and give it a go its so frustrating it not eating and ive also been told to try feeding a larger mouse would you reckon this is a good idea or should i stick to small mice |

oh right i wont try that then and after leaving the mice in the viv last night to see if it would take it i woke up this morn to find it hadnt even touched it so no luck there
i will try find sum chicks this week and give that a try for the next feed

| well just an update but it has now been the 3rd week and my little brb has still not eaten it has shed a few days ago about 4 but im gettin really concerned now as i think i have tried nearly everything if any one has any other ideas i would appriciate it alot |

I find Rainbows are usually one snake that people tend to feed small items to. I think it's because they're a little more slender than most boids, but don't let it fool you. That little head can take some big stuff. If food items are *too* small, they know they'll spend more energy trying to ingest it that they'll be gaining from doing so, and will often show no interest as a result.
The little one in these images (http://www.therainbowboa.co.uk/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1154) was just coming off of digesting 2 large adult mice, just for an example.
My first suggestion would be to try something a little larger. If there is no interested in larger, then I'd try (the next time) with something live. It often takes some movement to get them excited and it's usually quite easy to switch them to thawed food once they figure-out that food is good :) |

| Live mouse hoppers are like crack candy to these snakes, Adam. I wouldn't make it a habit, but I find it jumpstarts a stalled Brazilian feeder every time. As Todd said, try frozen one more time...but if that fails go with a mouse. Good luck! |

yea ill try a larger one on the next feed then and if that fails ill look into live food altho not sure if its legal in the uk but ill check it out
its very thrustrating tryin so hard and gettin no results but cheers for the replys hopefully it feeds
