Caught zeus out on his vine this arvo so perfect opportunity for another pic, can see some of his iridescence in this pic as well, it amazes me how colourful they are even at a young age of 5 months

Zeus weighed in at a nice and healthy 61g today before his feed, took a few pics of the food on its way down, decided to try feeding him in the viv like I do with my royal and it was totally different, he hit the fuzzy seriously hard instantly
He manages the fuzzies that he is on no problem at all so am wondering if its time to move him on a bit as his fuzzies are only 4g so well under 10% of his 61g bodyweight, whats next stage of food please and would I be right to try him on a larger feed ?
Another little question is does the substrate plantation soil harm the snake at all if very small quantities ingested with the meal ?

I'm not sure whether it harms them, but the one time I've ever fed Jade in her Viv, she definitely looked uncomfortable with a teeny bit of soil in her mouth, I would definitely advise against it myself as I wouldn't want to take the risk.
However, completely agree, the feeding response can be completely different! Don't want her to associate action in her viv as food though, or else when you next go to pick her up... BAM! |

A tiny bit of soil should should not be harmful; still, try to avoid it if possible.
I feed in my vivs regularly. |

Nice to see how Zeus is getting on Martin. Zippy who is from the same clutch as Zeus has been on rat pinkies since I got him, he now weighs in at 73g & is currently eating a 7-8g rat at least every 10days. Zippy has no trouble at all with rats of this size. |

Slightly off topic but do you feed Earl in his viv & is he a good eater?
Our Royal Salazar ate last weekend for the first time in nearly 4months, he has only eaten with us once (the week after we got him) after trying to feed him in a rub, I'd left the rat in his viv for him on a plastic tray so he would be able to pick it up without ingesting substrate, he eventually took it the following day.
Zippy has also recently being ignoring his food when offered in a feeding rub but if I leave the prey item in his rub (the one he lives in) he takes it, due to this I've put Zippy on kitchen roll instead of the orchid bark which he was on.
Perhaps if you intend to continue feeding Zeus in his viv you could put some slightly dampened kitchen roll down first. |

Good call, Mez: paper towel/kitchen roll is a great feeding substrate. :-) |

Hiya
Not had any trouble at all so far with zeus feeding on the mouse fuzzies probably with the size of them, bet hes starving on feed day
Up until this last feed I have always taken him out of his viv and fed him in the container he arrived in from as exotics withouht any problems so far and then put the container in the viv and let him come out when he`s finished and ready but thought about trying a feed in the viv this time like I do with my royal and couldn`t believe the difference
People say about the snakes becoming viv defensive or biting because of feeding in the viv but up to yet i can honestly say they definitely don`t show any aggression towards me but I always make sure I wash my hands in an antiseptic solution before handling so they associate the smell with me meaning no harm to them, thats my idea anyway and it seems to be working so far
